Delaney, Burney lead VU Trailblazers past Southwestern Illinois for 71-68 win
 February 24, 2013

Sophomores Deshawn Delaney and Monte Burney combined for 44 points to lead the NJCAA No. 9 Vincennes Trailblazers to a 71-68 win over Southwestern Illinois Saturday night at the VU P.E. Complex. The win improved VU’s record to 27-2 and capped off VU Sophomore Night for Burney, Delaney and fellow Trailblazer sophomores Michael Bradley, Darius Carter, Lamine Dieng, Tyran de Lattibeaudiere, Jerrod Gaston, Damarius Smith and Jeremiah Williams.

VU also honored Coach Todd Franklin for his 400th career win earlier this season and paid tribute to sophomore members of the VU cheer team.

Delaney and Burney accounted for 25 second half points and Carter scored all nine of his points after halftime to help the Trailblazers fight off the upset bid of the Blue Storm (19-9). Burney hit two of his four 3-pointers and Delaney drained another from beyond the arc at crucial times in the second half to help keep Southwestern Illinois at bay as Blue Storm sophomore center Keanau Post was putting up 15 of his 25 points.

The trio of Burney, Carter and Delaney also hit 10 free throws late in the game. VU never led by more than eight points in the second half.

The Trailblazers will close out the regular season Saturday as part of a men’s/women’s doubleheader at Southeastern Illinois in Harrisburg, IL.

Then, as the No. 1 seed in the NJCAA District 16 Tournament at Rend Lake in Ina, IL, VU will play at 12 p.m. Noon on March 6 vs. the winner of a March 4 play-in game between the No. 8 and No. 9 seeds.
