EC Softball Squad Sweeps Marion Military

East Central Community College’s fast-pitch softball team improved to 6-4 on the young season following a doubleheader sweep of Marion Military Institute Wednesday, Feb. 20 in Marion, Ala.

Amber McBroom of Brandon knocked in the go-ahead run in the sixth inning and the Lady Diamond Warriors held on for a 9-4 win in the opener. EC jumped out to an early 3-0 lead and cruised 10-2 in the second contest, which was called after five innings due to the eight-run rule.

McBroom, a freshman infielder, belted a double and two singles with two RBIs and was one of several players with multiple hits.

Also having productive outings at the plate were Morgan Porter of Enterprise, four singles and one RBI; Hayley Stephens of Union, double, two singles and three RBIs; Lindsey Beard of Clarkdale, two singles and one RBI; LaJoya Griffin of Philadelphia and Casey Cherry of Union, two singles each; Ty Buckley of Neshoba Central, single and RBI; and A. J. Peeler of Neshoba Central, single.

Runs were scored by Griffin (2), Porter (2), Buckley, Beard and Dakota Vowell of Neshoba Central.

Tenna Patterson went the distance on the mound to record the victory. She allowed four earned runs on seven hits and fanned four batters. She also walked six batters. Patterson is a product of Lexington (Ala.) High School.

In the nightcap, Buckley blasted two doubles and Peeler and Porter each had a double and single to lead the offense. Peeler led in RBIs with three and Buckley knocked in two runs. Porter was also credited with an RBI.

Other hitters were McBroom, double and two RBIs; Beard, double and RBI; Stephens, double; Vowell, single and RBI; and Griffin and Marlee Massey of Neshoba Central, singles each.

Runs were scored by Griffin (3), Porter (2), Buckley (2), McBroom, Massey and Vowell.

Mary Sanders got the win, allowing just one earned run on six hits. She fanned two batters and walked four. Sanders is a product of Adams County Christian.

The Lady Diamond Warriors will have a rematch with Marion Military Tuesday, Feb. 26 on the Decatur campus. Doubleheader action gets under way at 3 p.m.

EC’s fast-pitch softball program is led by head coach Kristin Chaney and assistant Courtney Nunn.
