Gainesville, FL – The Santa Fe Saints lost for the second time in as many games with the loss coming again in the late innings.  After a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Polk State on Wednesday SF fell 9-8 to the St. Petersburg College Titans after taking a 8-4 lead into the top of the ninth.

The FCSAA #1 ranked Saints (7-2) built an 8-1 lead on the strength of a six run fourth inning led by RBI singles from Bryan Evans and Jamal Martin, two wild pitches, a fielder’s choice and a hit batter.  SF scored their six runs on just three hits in the inning.

St. Pete chipped away with two in the sixth to cut the lead to 8-3 and added another in the eighth to make it 8-4.

Hanging on to a four run lead heading in to the ninth, the Saints unraveled, allowing five runs on five hits and one crucial error.  SF had a runner on in the bottom of the ninth but a nice play by the third baseman on a hard hit liner by Josh Stewart ended any chance of a rally.

JT Simpson started on the hill and pitched 6.1 innings, allowing three runs with four strikeouts.  Luke Helms surrendered one run in 0.2 innings of work and Derek Vail took the loss, allowing five runs in 1.1 innings.

Jonathan Camp finished the game 2-for-5 with two RBI, Jarred Mederos was 2-for-4 and Jamal Martin finished 1-for-4 with two runs scored and a RBI.

The Saints continue on Saturday, February 9 at home against South Florida State College in double header action scheduled to start at 12 noon.
