 January 11, 2013

MARYVILLE, Tenn. – The Walters State Senators hit the hardwood for the first time in 33 days on Thursday and walked away with an 83-67 win over the Maryville College junior varsity squad.
The Senators (8-8) never trailed and led by as many as 22 points in the second half of the contest after taking a 38-28 lead at halftime.

Walters State got a huge effort from freshman Elgrin Wilson, who pumped in 16 points and grabbed a career best 16 rebounds in the win.

Fellow freshmen Cedarius Taylor and Tyler Ailshie added 16 points each in the win, with Ailshie also grabbing seven rebounds to help the Senators hold a 51-39 advantage on the glass. Sophomore Leland Robinson totaled 12 points, and Dedron Pillow added eight in the win.

The Senators only had eight turnovers in the contest while forcing 14 on defense. They shot 40 percent (32 of 80) from the field in the win, which included just 4 of 20 from long range, and they made 15 of 25 from the free throw line.

Maryville shot just 33.9 percent (20 of 59) from the field in the contest, but they only made 25.9 percent (7 of 27) in the first half. The Scots knocked down 11 3-pointers on 28 tries, and they converted 16 of 25 from the charity stripe.

Kyle Adams led the Scots with 21 points in the win, while Richie Kelly added 14 and Logan Brewer totaled 13 in the loss.

The Senators return to the hardwood Saturday when they travel to Spartanburg, S.C., to take on sixth ranked and undefeated Spartanburg Methodist, who won an earlier matchup with Walters State 80-68 in November. Tipoff Saturday is set for 7 p.m.
