Badger men down CSI, 79-64
 January 4, 2013

EPHRAIM, Utah—The Snow College men got back on the winning track with a 79-64 win over the College of Southern Idaho Golden Eagles Thursday night. The win evens the Badgers’ record in the Scenic West Athletic Conference at 1-1 and 13-3 overall. CSI drops to 1-2 in league play and 13-4 overall.

CSI looked good early, jumping to a 12-2 lead in the first five minutes of the game. “I thought they really played well,” said Snow head coach Rob Nielson, “And we couldn’t make a basket early. But then we played a really solid 35 minutes the rest of the way.”

The Badgers stormed back after their slow start to take a 37-33 halftime lead. Snow then tightened up the defense, holding the Golden Eagles scoreless in the first six minutes of the second half while going on a 13-0 run to open up a 50-33 lead. The game was never in doubt the rest of the way.

Sophomore Cheikh Sane had a monster game for the Badgers, earning game-high honors with 16 points and 13 rebounds and hustling for six blocks. “Cheikh has been working really hard,” Nielson said. “This was by far his best game.”

Snow point guard Nick Gruninger continued his stellar play of late, matching Sane’s 16 points and dishing out eight assists. Gruninger was 2-2 from 3-point range as the Badgers went 9-for-14 from beyond the arc. “We’ve got good shooters,” Nielson said of his team’s overall 52 percent shooting from the field. “They pressured us a lot tonight and made us take our time on offense. That probably helped our shooting.”

Connor Van Brocklin added 14 points while London Simonsen chipped in 12 and Haudrick Hilaire’s 11 made it five Badgers in double figures. Roberts Baltruns had a strong game with nine boards.

CSI’s Darius Johnson also tied Sane and Gruninger for scoring honors with 16 points, 12 of those coming in the first half. But Johnson picked up his third personal just a minute after the break and spent most of the second half on the bench, helping spark Snow’s 13-0 run. Billy Reeder added 15 points for the Golden Eagles and tied James Reid with a team-high six rebounds. Reid finished with eight points.

Snow hosts North Idaho College (2-1, 15-3) on Saturday while CSI travels up the road to take on Salt Lake Community (2-0, 14-2).
