Hinds CC gridiron stars ink in December signing period

RAYMOND – On Wednesday, seven members of the 2012 Hinds Community College football team signed national-letters-of-intent in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) December signing period.Jabari Baker (Jackson), Steven Jordan (Vicksburg), Jordan Kersh (Brandon) and Quadarias Mireles (Boynton Beach, Fla.)  were the Eagles offensive standouts who signed on the dotted line Wednesday, while Tedarian Johnson (Jackson), Gaige Washington (Clinton) and Jimmy White (Edwards) were the defensive stalwarts who inked with four-year schools.

Baker, a sophomore running back, signed with Alabama A&M (Normal, Ala.) after leading Hinds in carries (112), rushing yards (736) and touchdowns (six) in 2012. He also caught seven passes for 57 yards as a sophomore. As a freshman in 2011, he carried the ball 26 times for 136 yards.

Jordan and Kersh, sophomore linemen who anchored the Eagles offensive line in 2012, will both head to the Natural State for their next two years.

Jordan was a two-year starter for the Eagles and signed on Wednesday with the University of Arkansas-Monticello (Monticello, Ark.).

Kersh inked with the University of Central Arkansas (Conway, Ark.) after making the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) All-State second team as a sophomore in 2012. He made a switch to the offensive line out of need in his second year after playing on the defensive line as a freshman, a year in which he recorded 20 solo tackles, seven assists, 2.5 tackles for a loss, one sack and one forced fumble.

Mireles, a sophomore wide receiver, signed with the University of Mississippi (Oxford) on Wednesday after two stellar seasons in Raymond. As a sophomore in 2012, he was named to the All-Region and MACJC All-State first team after catching 38 passes (tops on the team) for 365 yards and two touchdowns, carrying the ball 47 times for 249 yards and two touchdowns.

In 2011, Mireles caught 45 passes for 693 yards (both tops on the team) for three touchdowns and carried the ball 10 times for 110 yards and two touchdowns, and was named to the MACJC All-State second team for his efforts.

Johnson, a sophomore defensive lineman, signed with the University of Kansas (Lawrence, Kan.) on Wednesday. He had seven solo tackles, one assist and two sacks in 2012, and finished with 26 solo tackles, 12 assists, 11 tackles for loss and five sacks in 2011. It was after his freshman season that he was named to the MACJC All-State honorable mention team.

Washington, a sophomore safety, will be moving on to Missouri Southern State University (Joplin, Mo.). He finished the 2012 season with 15 solo tackles and eight assists, recovered a fumble, broke up a pass and tied for the team lead with two interceptions despite missing two games. In 2011, Washington picked up eight solo tackles and broke up three passes.

White, a sophomore defensive lineman, inked with Faulkner University (Montgomery, Ala.) on Wednesday. He had 13 solo tackles, 11 assists, 1.5 sacks and 2.5 tackles for loss in 2012. White sat out the 2011 season, but had a standout freshman season in 2010, when he finished with 26 solo tackles, 12 assists, 5.5 tackles for loss and one sack.
