OLATHE – After seeing an 11-point lead evaporate to one in the second half on Friday, the No. 2-ranked Hutchinson Community College women’s basketball team responded in a big way against No. 4 Iowa Western.
The Lady Dragons dominated the final 10 minutes of the game and defeated the Reivers 73-55 in an undefeated national Top-5 neutral-court game played at Mid-America Nazarene University’s Bell Family Arena.
The Lady Dragons (13-0) won their 54th consecutive regular-season game and are now 2-0 against NJCAA-ranked competition this season. HCC has one more non-conference game remaining before opening the Jayhawk West. That will be against Neosho County at 5 p.m. on Jan. 2 at the Sports Arena.

Out of the timeout, sophomore Chrisstasia Walter hit a momentum-changing 3-pointer which started a 11-0 Lady Dragon run over the next 2 minutes, 25 seconds. Sophomore Jasmine Patterson’s inside hoop with 8:05 to go gave Hutchinson a 54-42 lead.

HCC tied the game at 11-all when Patrick hit 1 of 2 free throws with 9:21 to play and took the lead for good at the 8:15 mark on a Sorrells cut the hoop for a bucket.

Two Walter layups and a Sorrells hoop ran the Hutch lead back to 33-24 with 20 seconds left, but Iowa Western got a bucket with 3 seconds remaining from Smith to cut the halftime deficit to 33-25.
Hutchinson’s lead grew to 10 points for the first time on a Herl basket with 18:06 to play. The lead was twice at 11, the second coming on a Walter transition hoop from a Jen’Von’Ta Hill assists to give the Lady Dragons a 42-31 lead with 14:58 to play in the second half.
The Lady Dragons went cold offensively, missing their next five shots over the next 4 minutes. The only offense over that span came on one Sorrells free throw as Iowa Western went on an 11-1 run and pulled within 43-42 on Smith’s 3-pointer with 10:52 in the game, forcing Ontjes to use a timeout.
Walter’s 3-pointer out of the timeout sparked an 11-0 HCC run over the next 2:25. Once the lead reached double figures, Iowa Western never cut it to single figures again.
