Senators top Maryville College JV, 78-61

MORRISTOWN, Tenn. – The Walters State Senators improved their season-best winning streak to four games Tuesday with a 78-61 home win over Maryville College JV inside ‘Z’ Buda Gymnasium.The Senators (7-6) outrebounded, outshot and outdefended the visiting Scots, as they held a 54-36 edge on the glass, shot nearly six percent better from the field and forced 19 turnovers in the win.

Walters State built a 41-32 lead at halftime by shooting 47.4 percent (18 of 38) from the floor, and they were a perfect 5 of 5 from the foul line.

The Senators cooled off in the second half, but they took a 75-53 lead before rolling to the win.

Walters State finished the contest shooting 41.3 percent (31 of 75) from the field, including just 2 of 9 from long range. The Senators scored 17 points off of the 19 Maryville miscues, and they grabbed 24 offensive rebounds in the win.

Tony Wilkerson paced Walters State with 16 points in the contest, while Fred Yarbrough added 12. Darius White chipped in nine points, while Elgrin Wilson, Denard Williams and Jeff Simpson each added eight in the win.

The Scots shot only 35.7 percent (20 of 56) from the field, which included only 6 of 24 from the 3-point line. Maryville shot just 28.6 percent (8 of 28) in the second half.

The Senators will be back in action Friday when they travel to Lynchburg to take on Tennessee Community College Athletic Association rival Motlow State. Tipoff is set for 9 p.m.
