JCJC Bobcats cruise past Co-Lin to remain perfect

ELLISVILLE – It was another solid performance for the Jones County Junior College Bobcats.

JCJC broke open a tie game midway through the first half and went on to crush the Copiah-Lincoln Community College Wolves 84-51 here Monday night at A.B. Howard Gymnasium.

The Bobcats improve to 9-0 overall and 2-0 in South Division play.

In the women’s game, the Lady Wolves overcame a 13-point first half deficit and went on to defeat JCJC, 75-62. The Lady Bobcats fall to 4-4 overall, 1-1 in division play.

JCJC will host Meridian Community College on Thursday. The women’s game will tipoff at 5 p.m., followed by the men’s game at 7 p.m. The contests will air on www.jcjc.tv with Mark Easley and Shawn Wansley on the call.

Co-Lin will host Delgado Community College (La.) at 2/4 p.m. on Saturday.

Bobcats 84, Wolves 51

Co-Lin tied the game at 17-17 with 9:03 left in the first half when Joseph Cunningham hit a 3-pointer.

But Donta Pittman answered with a basket, was fouled and hit the free throw to give JCJC the lead for good at 20-17 with 8:12 showing. That started a 9-0 run, capped by a Cory Jackson basket off an offensive rebound, which gave the Bobcats a 26-17 lead with 5:41 showing.

The Wolves got within 30-24 with 3:00 left when Chris Steverson hit a 3-pointer from the left wing. But Jones closed the half with a 12-3 run, punctuated by an Emmanuel Davis layup at the buzzer, which gave the Bobcats a 42-27 lead.

Jones dominated the second half, taking a 63-35 lead with 11:30 to play when Detrick Davis scored off an assist by J.J. Bolton. The closest Co-Lin got after that was 64-42 with 8:44 to go when Cunningham made two free throws.

The Bobcats’ biggest lead would be at the end of the game.

Detrick Davis paced the Bobcats with 23 points, while Tanner Wozniak added 13. Jackson and Wesley Bell-Blackmon had 11 each.

Jay Case and Cunningham had 13 points each for the Wolves, 1-7 overall and 0-2 in league play. Steverson added 11.

Lady Wolves 75, Lady Bobcats 62

The Lady Bobcats led for most of the game, but Co-Lin took the lead for good with less than eight minutes remaining.

Trailing 9-7 early, JCJC went on a 14-0 run to take a 21-9 lead with 11:59 left in the first half when Kimberly Clemts scored. The Lady Bobcats would take their longest lead of the game at 24-11 with 9:31 showing when LaTisha McCullum hit a 3-pointer from the right wing.

Co-Lin trimmed the lead to 29-22 with 3:42 left when T’Keya Moore scored. JCJC then got another 3-pointer from McCullum and two free throws from Caitlyn Spane to take a 34-22 lead with 2:57 left.

But Co-Lin ended the half on a 9-2 run and would trail 36-31 at intermission.

The Lady Wolves would come out in the second half and take a 47-44 lead with 14:44 to play when Chanta Poole made a 3-pointer. But the Lady Bobcats answered with six straight points and went up 50-47 with 12:05 to play when Clemts hit a turnaround jumper.

The game would then be tied at 50-50, 52-52 and 54-54. The Lady Wolves would then take the lead for good at 56-54 with 7:55 left when Kierra Collins made two free throws. That started a 13-2 run and Co-Lin would go up 67-56 with 5:56 left on Laura Beth Wright’s 3-pointer from the right corner.

Co-Lin would match its largest lead at the end of the game.

Clemts led JCJC with 14 points, while McCullum added 13.

Moore had 14 for the Lady Wolves, 7-1 overall and 2-0 in the division. Poole added 13 and Tiffany Sims had 11.
