Senators rally, top Columbia State in overtime, 75-71

MORRISTOWN, Tenn. – The Walters State Senators rallied from an 8-point deficit in the final three minutes, then got a bucket from Elgrin Wilson in the final seconds of overtime to defeat the Columbia State Chargers, 75-71, in Tennessee Community College Athletic Association play.

The Senators trailed by as many as 11 in the second half after holding a halftime lead, but their rally evened their record at 6-6 overall and put them at 3-2 in TCCAA action. The loss drops Columbia State to 5-5 and 2-4.

The Senators set the pace early, getting easy looks inside and taking a 10-6 lead in the first five minutes before the Chargers stormed back to take a 17-14 lead midway through the half.

Walters State tied it at 23 with 4:40 left in the half, and they eventually took a 6-point lead late in the half before settling for a 33-30 lead at halftime.

The Senators shot 41.4 percent (12 of 29) in the first half, 2 of 6 from long range and 7 of 12 from the charity stripe, and Darius White led them with nine points in the frame.

The Chargers knocked down 41.7 percent (10 of 24) from the field, including 4 of 15 from long distance. A.J. Dodd totaled nine points in the half, leading Columbia State.

The Chargers continued to knock down perimeter shots early in the second half, and they used two 3-pointers and a 3-point play in an 18-5 run that gave them a 48-38 lead with 12:33 left to play.

The Senators cut the lead to 48-44, but a 6-0 run by Columbia extended the lead back to 54-44 with 6:41 remaining in the contest.

Walters State trailed 59-51 with 2:55 left, and they trimmed the deficit to 62-57 on a pair of free throws by Tony Wilkerson with less than two minutes left. A Tyler Ailshie layup in the final minute got the Senators within a bucket, and White buried a 3-pointer to knot the score at 62 with 15.2 seconds left.

Walters State got off two shots in the final seconds but could not convert, sending the game to overtime.

Columbia jumped on top in overtime on a 3-pointer by Arturs Bremers, but the Senators took the lead, 66-65, later on a layup by Denard Williams midway through the extra period. A bucket by Sha’Karee Scaife gave the Chargers a 3-point lead, but a 3-point play by Williams tied it at 71 with 33.3 seconds remaining.

After a Columbia turnover, Wilson gave Walters State the lead with a layup with 8.0 left, and a pair of free throws by Tyler Ailshie sealed the win.

The Senators shot 41.5 percent (27 of 65) from the field in the win, with White and Williams each tossing in 15 points. Wilson and Fred Yarbrough each added 12 and Ailshie had 10 in the win.

Bremers led Columbia State with 18 points, while Dodd added 11 in the defeat.

The Senators will be back on the hardwood Tuesday when they host the Maryville College JV team inside ‘Z’ Buda Gymnasium. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.
