Senators roll past Milligan JV, 98-70
 November 27, 2012

MORRISTOWN, Tenn. – For the first 20 minutes Tuesday, the Walters State Senators played inconsistent. The final 20 minutes where a different story.

The Senators snapped a five-game losing streak, using a 55-point second half to roll to a 98-70 win over the visiting Milligan College JV Buffaloes inside ‘Z’ Buda Gymnasium.

The Buffaloes took a quick lead in the first minute, but it was all Walters State (4-6) after that. Leland Robinson poured in two straight buckets before a 3-pointer by Cedarius Taylor pushed lead to 7-2.

After a bucket by Milligan, the Senators responded with a 13-4 run, as Elgrin Wilson knocked down two shots and Taylor added another triple to extend the lead to 20-8 with 13:25 left in the half.

The Buffs trimmed the lead to 24-17, but a long 3-pointer by Darius White pushed the margin back to double digits midway through the half. Milligan cut the deficit to 37-34, but White tossed in another 3-pointer with a little over a minute left in the half to help the Senators take a 43-36 halftime lead.

Walters State shot 41.5 percent (17 of 41) from the field in the first half, including 7 of 16 from long range. Taylor had 11 points and Robinson added nine in the opening 20 minutes.

Milligan shot 45.7 percent (16 of 35) but only made 4 of 13 from 3-point range. Will Carpenter and Zoc Cantadore had nine and eight points, respectively, in the first half.

Milligan scored the first four points of the second half, but a quick 8-0 spurt by the Senators got them back on track. Taylor had two buckets and Tony Wilkerson added a layup to extend the lead to 51-40.

Walters State continued to build on the lead, as Tyler Ailshie and Fred Yarbrough had buckets in a run that padded the margin to 64-46 with 11:40 left. Yarbrough had three straight short-range jumpers fall and a pair of free throws to push the lead to 75-48 with 8:08 remaining.

The Buffaloes could not cut the lead below 23 the rest of the way, as the Senators cruised to the win.

Walters State ended the night shooting 47.6 percent (39 of 82) from the field while making 11 of 25 from 3-point range.

Taylor had 18 points and eight assists to lead the Senators, while Robinson added 15 points, Yarbrough had 13 and Wilson finished with eight points and 10 boards. Walters State owned a 55-32 edge on the glass.
