Iowa Central Sweeps Half Marathon Titles

LEVELLAND, Texas – For the second consecutive year, the men’s and women’s long-distance teams from Iowa Central Community College are the national champions in NJCAA Half Marathon. The Tritons and Lady Tritons dominated the 13.2 mile course that featured nearly 200 runners.ICCC’s Stanley Kebenei won his second individual half-marathon title in as many years, crossing the finish line first overall with a time of 1:07:01. Jamal Boma and Abbabiya Simbassa from Iowa Central finished third and fourth overall with times of 1:09:50 and 1:10:53. George Gathuru of Cloud County Community College (Kan.) was the runner up (1:07:01).

The Triton men tallied just eight team points to take the team title, which is the lowest team total in the event’s history. El Paso Community College (Texas) and Spartanburg Methodist College (S.C.) rounded out the top three in the men’s standings.

The ICCC women were led by Jodi Miller and Jamie Neal who finished second (1:26:57) and fourth (1:27:44) overall. Darroneshia Lott of South Plains College (Texas) won her second individual NJCAA national title in as many weeks when she crossed the finish line first overall (1:24:16). Lott won the individual women’s title at the NJCAA Division I Women’s Cross Country Championship in Ina, Ill., last week.

The ICCC women edged South Plains, who they shared the national title with a year ago, in the final team standings. Iowa Central finished with 15 points, while SPC tallied 18. Spartanburg Methodist finished third.
