 November 16, 2012

OVERLAND PARK, KS – The NJCAA released its first regular season poll for the 2012-13 season yesterday, and the Johnson County Community College women’s team has reclaimed the top spot in Division II basketball. Picked seventh in the preseason poll, JCCC jumped to the No. 1 position after a 4-0 start and outscoring their opponents 81.2 to 28.0.Johnson County is not unfamiliar with a No. 1 ranking under current head coach Ben Conrad. JCCC was the No. 1 team in the final 11 polls last year, and have held the top stop in 18 of the last 30 polls released by the NJCAA.

Shortly after learning of their lofty ranking, Johnson County was put the test by Brown Mackie College, one of the other five D-II schools in the state. The Lady Cavaliers recorded a 27-point victory, but the defense allowed over 60 points for just the fourth time in 40 games, winning 89-61 to improve to 5-0.

Three players scored in double figures for Johnson County, led by freshman Sameia Kendall with 16. She also had a team high six steals. Sophomore Kathleen Brisbane recorded a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds, and freshman Taylor McDowell knocked down three treys to finish with 13 points.  Freshman guard Timeka O’Neal and sophomore guard Dashawn Harden each contributed eight points, as did freshman forward Kariel Hutt along with game high 11 boards.

Kayla Mollere slashed her way through the paint for 17 points and Erika Torres hit four 3-pointers for 12 points to lead Brown Mackie.
