VU Bowlers looking for improvement after disappointing season opener
October 8, 2012
MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Vincennes University Blazer Bowling Team opened its 2012 season at the Hammer Midwest Collegiate Classic Saturday and Sunday in Milwaukee, WI, with a 28th place team finish (10,603 total pins). The field included 42 teams and Robert Morris University of Illinois won with 12,330 pins.
Sophomore Dan Healy led the Trailblazers’ individual finishes with a 50th place showing (1751 pins in nine games for a 194 average). Healy also had VU’s High Series (626) and High Game (224) scores.
VU Coach Gary Sparks said he hopes the season-opener is more than just the first event of the season for the Trailblazers.
“Overall, I think it was a big eye-opener for the bowlers…I hope, especially, for our freshmen,” he said. “As always, getting indoctrinated to college bowling is a major adjustment for our players. Hopefully, this will open their eyes as I don’t feel they have really been paying attention to, and really listening to some of the things I’ve been trying to prepare them for.”
Sparks also held VU’s sophomore bowlers accountable for the disappointing opening performance.
“We are lacking some serious leadership where our second year players have to step up and provide a missing ingredient for us to get better,” he said. “We have considerable potential with the talent level but without the commitment to work at what needs to be done at his level we will struggle at the tournaments.
“I believe the bowlers learned a lot from our experience this weekend but now the job is to put that into play, and communicate with the rest of the team to get all of them understanding what it is going to take for us to compete,” Sparks added. “Of course, as a team, and a coach, I’m not used to playing at this level and I think that message was presented plainly enough to the team to encourage some much needed harder – and more dedicated – work to make us more successful.”
Following Healy for the NJCAA Defending National Champion Trailblazers at Milwaukee were:
· Jalen Scott-Jones (1729 pins, 9 games, 192 average).
· Jesse Gibson (1729 pins, 9 games, 192 average),
· Corey Umbrello (1269 pins, 7 games, 181 average),
· Zach Young (1053 pins, 6 games, 175 average),
· Kyle Petersen (520 pins, 3 games, 173 average), and,
· Devon Stewart (334 pins, 2 games, 167 average).
Up next, VU will travel to the Western Shootout at Western Bowl in Indianapolis on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 13 and 14.
