November 5, 2009
Vincennes (2-0) came from 16 points down in the second half by outscoring visiting Olney Central by 20 in the final 20 minutes to post a 96-87 victory over the Blue Knights Wednesday night. Guards Donald Stewart and Keith Ford fueled much of the comeback, with forward Daimion Garrett, guard Fred Ford and post player Jan Petrovcic pitching in to boost VU in outscoring Olney Central 59-39 in the second half. Stewart finished with 20 points - 15 in the second half - and Keith Ford had 19 - 16 after intermission, including two late 3-pointers that helped keep the Blue Knights (1-1) at bay. Garrett and Fred Ford each chipped in with 13 and guard Ryan Allen had 12. Guard Austin Akers led Olney Central with a game-high 24 points, while forward Aseante Roberts and guard Latroi Wright each had 19. Olney Central got ahead 48-37 at halftime and stretched the lead to as many as 16 early in the second half before the Trailblazers chipped away and stayed close until Petrovcic capped the comeback and put VU ahead for the first time since early in the game. The lead went back and forth until the Trailblazers managed to go ahead for good with just less than 4:00 remaining. Keith Ford's second trey in less than three minutes staked VU to a 93-87 lead with 1:32 to go and the Blue Knights never scored again, missing a couple attempts from behind the arc while Fred Ford added insurance free throws in the closing seconds. Vincennes survived a foul-filled contest in which the Trailblazers committed 29 fouls and Olney Central was whistled for 27. The Blue Knights made the most of it at the line, canning 31 of 37. VU held on by making 24 of 31 at the stripe and making eight 3-pointers. The Trailblazers host Carl Sandburg at 7 p.m. Saturday. The game follows the 2-0 Vincennes Lady Trailblazers' game versus Olive-Harvey at 5 p.m.
