Barton men's hoops starts season off with easy win
 November 4, 2009

The Barton Community College men's basketball team opened its 2009-10 season with an easy win over the Bethany College JV Tuesday night. The Cougars rolled to a 113-50 win over the Swedes at the Barton Gym. Barton put six players in double figures in the win and shot better than 50 percent for the contest. The Cougars will get back-to-back contests this weekend when they travel to Liberal to take part in Seward County's Pepsi Classic. Barton will play Hesston on Friday and the Colorado Kings Saturday. Both games will tip at 4 pm in the Greenhouse.

Highlights

Barton led 10-0 in the game's 1st 3 minutes and was never challenged. The Cougars pushed the lead to 23-3 and kept that margin in tact most of the opening half, leading 48-24 at the intermission. The lone downside of the opening half was a 4-for-14 effort at the free throw. That after freshman Ebenezer Davis made the final 2 charity tosses of the half.

Barton continued to score points with ease in the 2nd half, scoring 65 in the final 20 minutes. A big difference in the higher point total was the fact Barton hit 18-of-25 free throws in the 2nd half for a 72 percent clip. The Cougars also shot nearly 58 percent from the field.

Freshman Karon Burton led a balanced scoring attack with 18 points to go with a team-high 6 assists and no turnovers from the point guard spot. Freshman Collin Beatty added 16 points and 12 rebounds, recording a double-double in his 1st outing as a Cougar. Dennan Murrow, the lone returning player from last year's Jayhawk West title team, tossed in 12 points on 4-of-8 3-point shooting. Redshirt freshman Kevin Smith added 12 points, 4 assists and 7 rebounds. Freshmen Joe Reid and Ronald Baker added 11 and 10.

Barton will get its 1st taste of the road this weekend heading to Liberal. The Cougars will battle Hesston, which opened its 2009-10 season with a 90-67 win over Union College Tuesday night as well.
