Panthers Advance to Semifinal Saturday at TC3
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - A goal with 4:39 left to play gave the TC3 men's soccer team a 3-2 playoff win over Broome Community College Tuesday. The NJCAA Region III quarterfinal win puts the Panthers into a semifinal game Saturday against top-seed Herkimer County Community College at noon. The semifinal round Saturday and championship game Sunday will be held at TC3.
The visiting Panther opened the scoring in the 19th minute of play when Magor Mbengue (International H.S./Bronx) took the ball near midfield and worked his way through several defenders before beating the Broome keeper to make it 1-0. The lead held until the 36th minute when Broome scored off a set play after a free kick near the TC3 box. The 1-1 deadlock held into the break.
In the second half, the Panthers had a solid chance early, but a header by Brandon Kohler (Minisink Valley H.S./Westtown) just four minutes into the half was stopped by the Broome keeper. The save kept it 1-1, but the Broome keeper couldn't stop a header by Mbengue in the 61st minute that made it 2-1. The lead lasted until the 72nd minute, when Broome evened the score at 2-2.
With the score even, the Panthers put together the game-winning rush in the closing minutes. David Cerasani (Otselic Valley H.S./Plymouth) started the play, working in towards goal along the right end line. Cerasani played a pretty pass into the box, which Mbengue touched over to an open Salar Ahmad (Binghamton H.S./Disoldov, Germany), who fired the ball past the keeper for the score.
TC3 keeper Lucas Mitchell (Thousand Islands H.S./Clayton) earned the win, in part due to a big save in the first half when he deflected a Broome shot taken from close range.
With the win, TC3's record is now 13-7. Broome ends its season 11-6.
