VU survives scare from upset-minded Southeastern Illinois

No. 10 Trailblazers escape with 81-80 win after Falcons hang close throughout game

HARRISBURG,Ill. – The Vincennes Trailblazers survived a scare byupset-minded host Southeastern Illinois Wednesday night, escaping with an 81-80 win after trailing at one point in the second half.

Freshman guard Charles Foster scored a career-high 27 points and freshman guard Everett Clemons had a career-high 18 for the NJCAA No. 10 Trailblazers (17-2). Sophomore Devin Foster had 13.

Freshman forward Malcolm Hughes scored a game-high 28 points for Southeastern Illinois. Freshman guard Jaylen Carter finished with 24 and freshman forward Alan Long chipped in with 15 for the Falcons (4-12).

The Trailblazers were never able to pull away from Southeastern Illinois and Long’s 3-pointer as time expired in the first half helped the Falcons be within a point of the Trailblazers at 37-36 at halftime. VU got its lead to as much as 10 at one point in the second half and fell behind 44-42 at another juncture in the second 20 minutes. VU also endured a couple of Southeastern Illinois shots as time ran out in regulation.

Both teams combined for a long-range barrage. VU got six treys from Charles Foster and three from beyond the arc from Devin Foster for its nine 3-pointers. Hughes drained five of Southeastern Illinois’ 12 treys. Long hit three 3-pointers.

The Trailblazers’ narrow escape was also helped by VU’s 20-for-28 performance at the free throw line, while the Falcons went 14-for-22 at the stripe.

VU will return home Saturday to host Lewis & Clark in a 7 p.m. match-up at the VU P.E. Complex.
