Hinds CC men's T&F competes in opening meet

RAYMOND – The Hinds Community College men’s track and field program opened the 2014 season on Saturday in Birmingham, Ala., competing in the Auburn University Indoor Invitational.

The Eagles had a strong showing as usual, led by Andre Jefferson (Tyler, Texas), who was the winner in the long jump event with a leap of 24 feet, seven inches.

Hinds had three top-20 finishes in the 400-meter dash, including Michael Newton (Atlanta, Ga.), who finished in sixth place with a time of 48.09 seconds, and Dontavious Wright (Conyers, Ga.), who came in 10th place overall with a time of 48.76 seconds.

Curtis Walker (Lexington, S.C.) finished the event in 49.09 seconds to come in 16th place overall and allow all three team members to qualify for the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Indoor Nationals in March.

Newton is currently second in the latest NJCAA standings for the 400-meter dash, while Wright ranks ninth and Walker ranks 14th overall.

The Eagles had 10 student-athletes qualify for nationals after the opening meet, including the following:

·         Newton (400-meter dash, 48.09 seconds)

·         Wright (400-meter dash, 48.76 seconds)

·         Walker (400-meter dash, 49.09 seconds)

·         Mateo Edward (Panama City, 60-meter dash, 6.95 seconds)

·         Robert Wells (Fayette, 60-meter dash, 6.99 seconds)

·         Jefferson (Long jump, 24 feet, seven inches)

·         Newton, Wright, Walker and Jeroderick Draper (Utica), (4x400 meter relay team, 3:15.42).
