Ninth-ranked Trailblazers pick up road win at Shawnee by 88-74 score
 January 12, 2014

Sophomore Loomis Gerring rings up 29 in VU's 14th victory of season

ULLIN, Ill.– It was a game of defensive ebbs and flows for the Vincennes University Men’s Basketball Team but the Trailblazers topped Shawnee 88-74 Saturday afternoon in Ullin, IL, to improve to 14-1 on the season.

The victory also upped the NJCAA No. 9 Trailblazers’ record in District 16 competition to 4-1.

Sophomore forward Loomis Gerring (career-high 29 points) and sophomore guard Devin Foster (22 points) combined for 51 points to lead the Trailblazers on Saturday. Sophomore Willie Wiley scored 13 and freshman Charles Foster finished with 11.

Freshman guard Jaylon Smith led Shawnee (8-3) with 17 points. The Saints also got 13 points each from freshman forward Justin Leon and sophomore guard Stanley Malcom, whilesophomore guard/forward Jobe Dillard had 12 points.

The Trailblazers got out to a fast start and jumped out to a 28-8 early lead. The Saints then got things straightened out and – despite Gerring’s 18 first half points – Shawnee outscored VU 27-16 the rest of the half to cut the halftime lead to 44-35 VU.

Devin Foster drained a trey and hit a pair from the line to help VU extend the lead to 14 for the Trailblazers early in the second half. That offensive flurry led to VU stretching its lead back to 20 points again, and the Trailblazers led by as many as 23 at one point, but another 15-6 run by the Saints narrowed the lead again to the final margin.

The Trailblazers will travel Monday to Lincoln Trail in Robinson, IL, for an 8 p.m. (Vincennes time) game after the game was postponed twice since early December because of inclement weather. VU will then return home Wednesday for a men’s and women’s doubleheader vs. John A. Logan at the VU P.E. Complex. On Wednesday, the ladies start at 5 p.m. and the men will follow at about 7 p.m.
