DRYDEN, N.Y. – The Tompkins Cortland Community College baseball team dropped its season finale doubleheader Thursday, falling at home to Niagara County Community College by scores of 6-4 and 21-1. The season ends for the Panthers with a record of 7-25 in the West Division and 7-27 overall.
The Panthers fell behind early in both games. In each game, Niagara scored three runs in the top of the first, and in each game the Panthers put one across in the bottom of the frame. But in the opener, Niagara answered with two more in the second inning to lead 5-1.
TC3 mounted a rally in the third, scoring three times on consecutive hits by Akeem Vereen (John F. Kennedy H.S./Bronx), Brian Pfund (East Hampton H.S./Montauk), and Sean Streb (Lansing H.S./Lansing) plus an RBI groundout by Matt Jones (Greene H.S./Greene).
The 5-4 score held until the fifth when Niagara scored an insurance run to make it 6-4. The Panthers threatened in the bottom of the fifth but couldn’t narrow the gap.
Game two saw the first inning end with Niagara ahead 3-1 and the visitors add to the lead in each inning before ending the game after five innings and a 21-1 lead.
Streb finished the day 4-for-4 to end the year with a .373 batting average. Pfund went 2-for-6 to end the year at .303. Jones also ended the year over .300, going 1-for-4 Thursday to finish at .337.
