 May 6, 2013

John Morgan Berry’s two-run double in the eighth inning and a superb pitching performance from southpaw Caleb McKee helped provide home standing East Central Community College with a 5-2 victory over Mississippi Delta Community College Sunday in the first game of a best-of-three series leading to the MACJC State Baseball Tournament.

Berry’s blast scored Rubert Alcantara and Xavier Franklin and gave the Diamond Warriors the lead for a good and a 1-0 advantage going into today’s (Monday) 3 p.m. contest with the Trojans at the Clark/Gay Baseball Complex on the Decatur campus. A game three – if necessary – will be played tonight.

Berry is a product of Madison Central High School.

Other hitters were Franklin – a former standout at Newton County High School – Ryan Shotts of Louisville and Deion Ulmer of Laurel, RBI singles each; and Dominican Republic native Alcantara and Chase Domino of Fairhope (Ala.) High School, singles each.

McKee fanned 10 batters and allowed one earned run on four hits during eight innings of work. He walked two batters. The sophomore hurler is a product of Neshoba Central High School.

Jordan Mixon hurled a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save. Mixon fanned two batters and allowed one hit. He also walked a batter. Mixon is a product of East Webster High School.

The Diamond Warriors are now 27-19 under head coach Neal Holliman and assistants Justin Brewer and Jack Edmonson.
