LADY DRAGONS SEVENTH IN REGION; SECOND IN JAYHAWK WEST

GREAT BEND – For the second-straight year, the Hutchinson Community College women’s track and field team finished second in the Jayhawk West  and placed seventh overall at the 2013 Region VI Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Friday and Saturday at Barton Community College.

Sophomore Diosha Johnson was the only Lady Dragon to capture a regional championship, claiming the 10,000-meter crown on Friday. The Lady Dragons scored 25 points in the throws and freshman Cecilia Lane scored 16 points in two individual events and one relay.

Butler won the Region VI and Jayhawk West women’s championships, scoring 135 points in the region. The Lady Dragons were seventh in the regional standings with 67 points. Point totals for the Jayhawk West weren’t immediately available.

On Friday night, Johnson became the latest Lady Dragon athlete to punch her ticket to the NJCAA Outdoor Track and Field championships at Gowans Stadium by winning the 10,000 meters. Johnson dominated the field, winning by almost 10 full seconds, and posing a winning time of 44 minutes, 10.88 seconds. That time was the seventh fastest time in HCC women’s track history.

Lane had a strong championship by scoring in three events.

Lane finished second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 12:39.23. She then finished fourth in the 5,000 meters with a time of 20:20.44, which is the eighth-best time in HCC women’s team history.

Lane ran the lead leg of HCC’s seventh-place 4x800-meter relay, joining Taylor Stewart, Kaitlin Henson and Ashlynn Lambert to post a time of 10:57.75.

HCC’s season-long top scorers – the throwing events – were their usual strong selves.

Freshman Cassie Caswell scored in three events, her best finish was third in the discus with a throw of 121 feet, 11 inches. Caswell had the eighth-best shot put in team history with a distance of 39-10 ¾, which was fifth overall. Caswell also finished fifth in the hammer throw with a distance of 131-5.

Sophomore Megan Wood placed second in the  javelin with a throw of 120-6. Sophomore Autumn Iverson was sixth in the shot put at 39-1 ¼.

Other Lady Dragon placings at regionals:

+ Paige Stuhlsatz was second in the pole vault at 9-6 ¼.

+ Taylor Stewart placed sixth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at 13:18.52.

+ Ashlynn Lambert placed seventh in the 1,500 meters at 5:30.68

+ Kiersten Lee was seventh in the 200 meters in 26.36 seconds.

+ The 4x400-meter relay team of Lauren Jacobs, Lambert, Emily Heissler and Abby VanBuren placed seventh in 4:34.84.
