WNCC softball downs Garden City for their 50th win of the season
 April 28, 2013

Angel Council delivered the game-winning single in the seventh inning to help the 19th-ranked Western Nebraska Community College softball team came back to drop Garden City Community College 4-3 in the second game of a doubleheader at Volunteer Field Saturday afternoon.
In the opener, Bianca Duran tied the season record for pitching wins in claiming her 32nd of the season in leading the Cougars to a 3-0 win. Duran pitched a 3-hiter, striking out four.
The two wins gave WNCC 50 wins on the season. The Cougars and Garden City will battle in another doubleheader on Sunday at 11 a.m. at Volunteer Field. Sunday's game will be sophomore recognition for the nine sophomores as well as a special dedication/recognition to everyone that helped in the building of the new restrooms, utility room, and umpire room at Volunteer Field.
Saturday's second game, however, was a dandy as the Cougars needed some seventh-inning magic to pull out the win.
WNCC fell behind to Garden City 2-0 before slicing the lead in half with a single run in the third as Danielle Hearn scored on a Kasey Cash single.
The Broncbusters would add another run in the sixth to lead 3-1. WNCC would win the game in the seventh with two outs. Hearn got things started with a single. Duran then had a hard single to put two players on . Cash then came through with her second and third RBIs of the game with a double to the gap in left field to tie the game at 3-3. Council then delivered the game-ending single into shallow left field that scored Cash with the game-winner.
WNCC managed nine hits in the contest. Cash went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs, while Hearn went 2-for-3 with two singles. Council also went 2-for-4 in the game with a triple and an RBI.
Shelby McGraw also had a double in the contest.
RaVae Herrera picked up the win in the circle, scattering seven hits and giving up three runs. Herrera also struck out six and did not walk a batter.
The first game was a defensive battle as WNCC scored single runs in the first, third and sixth inning.
WNCC didn't need much more offense behind Duran's blazing pitching where she threw 53 strikes out of 71 pitches, along with some sensational defensive plays.
Duran got the offensive started in the first inning with a lead-off double and then scored on a Council double. WNCC made it 2-0 in the third as Kayla Romey scored on a Council ground out.
WNCC would add an insurance run in the sixth as Cottle tripled and scored on a Mariah Shepherd single.
Duran and Shepherd each had two hits for the Cougars. Council had a double and two RBIs.
After Sunday's games, the Cougars will enter Region IX tournament play on Wednesday at McCook.
