 April 28, 2013

MORRISTOWN, Tenn. – The Walters State Senators are champions of the Tennessee Community College Athletic Association again.

The 18th ranked Senators completed a three-game sweep of TCCAA rival Roane State Saturday with a 13-4 victory over the Raiders at Senator Field, clinching the outright TCCAA and NJCAA Region VII regular season crowns.

With the win, Walters State improves to 35-16 overall and finishes 19-8 in league play to win the title. With the title, the Senators are automatic qualifiers for the NJCAA East Central District Tournament on May 16-19, which they will host. The winner of that tournament advances to the JUCO World Series in Grand Junction, Colo.

The loss ends the season for the Raiders with a 10-28 record and a 4-22 mark in TCCAA action.

The Senators jumped on top in the home half of the first inning with a two-out rally. Matt Harrell cracked a single and scored on an RBI double by Jared Allen to make it 1-0.

Walters State added to the lead in the third. Jake Farr led off the inning with an infield single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Elijah Sutherland. After Michael Smith walked, Harrell drove in a run with a base hit and Reid Mathews added a two-run single to extend the lead to 5-0.

The Senators added another run in the fourth on an RBI single by Allen, but the Raiders responded in the fifth. Colby Reeder ripped an RBI double and Shane Salley added a three-run homer to make it 6-4.

Walters State built the lead back to six runs by plating a pair in the fifth and two more in the sixth. Sutherland drew a bases loaded walk and Smith added an RBI on a sacrifice fly in the fifth before Allen led off the sixth with a home run. Farr added an RBI single to push the margin to 10-4.

The lead remained the same into the eighth inning when Brycen Roberts smashed a three-run homer to extend the lead to 13-4.

Harrell led the Senators with four hits, while Allen added three hits and three RBIs in the win. Sutherland and Farr both added two hits in the victory, with Sutherland and Mathews both driving in a pair of runs.

Josh Peterson (6-3) picked up the win after giving up four earned runs on six hits while fanning eight batters in seven innings. Zach Walton and Chase Cunningham each tossed a scoreless inning in relief to lock down the win.

Salley and Reeder had two hits each in the loss for the Raiders. Kenzie Goins took the defeat after surrendering six earned runs on nine hits in 3.1 innings.

The Senators return to action Monday when they travel to Elizabethton to take on Milligan College. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
