BOONEVILLE, Miss. –  Northeast Mississippi Community College softball team inched closer to the Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) State Tournament with a split against rival Itawamba Community College in Booneville on Tuesday, April 23.

Northeast (21-14-1, 13-9 in North Division) rallied for an 8-2 win in the nightcap after dropping a 5-2 decision to the Lady Indians in the opener.

In the second game of the doubleheader, Bianca Chagolla and Erin Dixson combined to shut down the high-powered Itawamba offense.

Chagolla and Dixson limited Itawamba to just three hits through seven innings while helping Northeast head softball coach Jody Long reach the 200-win milestone.

Northeast wasted little time in getting on the board in the nightcap as Dixson laced a one-out single to centerfield in the first inning that scored Chagolla, who had doubled earlier in the frame.

Northeast pushed the advantage to 3-0 in the second behind RBI singles from Gracie Michael and Chagolla. Michael’s one-out infield single chased home Dana Glissen who had tripled an at bat earlier and Chagolla’s single to left scored Michael to give the host a three-run cushion.

Itawamba (29-12-1, 16-6) rallied back to cut the game to 3-2 in the third as the Lady Indians tallied two of their three hits in the game.

A Kami Roberts double to center plated Catherine Carver while Kory Watterson’s double to left chased home Roberts two batters later.

After coming in for relief, Dixson induced Ashley Camp into a groundout to short to end the threat.

Northeast put the game out of reach in the fourth as the Lady Tigers rallied for four runs including starting the inning off with four straight singles.

Michael got the inning going with a 0-2 single to centerfield and Andrea Cutts followed with a single to right. Chagolla and Dixson made sure the Lady Indians paid with back-to-back singles.

Chagolla’s single to right drove in Michael and Cutts while Dixson pushed the lead to 6-2 with her single to left.

Mooreville’s Victoria White put the final touches on the inning when the Northeast freshman lifted a sacrifice fly into right that scored Dixson from third.

In the opener, Itawamba struck fast with five runs in its first two at bats and never looked back against the Lady Tigers.

Itawamba tallied three runs in the first off the bats of Watterson and Anna Holley. Watterson’s single put the visitors up 1-0 while Holley’s infield single allowed two to score.

Itawamba kept the pressure on with a pair of runs in the second as Roberts’ bunt single scored Monica Wade and the Lady Indians tried to put more on the board with a double steal only to see one run score before Northeast was able to get out of the inning.

Northeast would not go away quietly as the Lady Tigers tallied runs in the fourth and sixth to cut the game to 5-2.

New Albany’s Ellen Tarrant accounted for both runs for the Lady Tigers. Tarrant’s single to left in the fourth chased home Dixson while the Northeast sophomore made it a three-run game in the sixth with her sacrifice fly to left that scored Cutts.
