OC Sports Softball Players of the Week: April 1-7
 April 10, 2013

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Meriam Maynord (Roane State, Tenn.), Brooke Bell (Pitt CC, N.C.), Amanda Best (Dodge City CC, Kan.), Samantha O’Connor (CCBC-Catonsville, Md.), Kara Ekx (Rock Valley College, Ill.) and Elizabeth Gratta (Middlesex CC, N.J.) have been named OC Sports NJCAA softball players of the week for games April 1-7. 


DIVISION I PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Meriam Maynord – Roane State Community College, Tenn.
Third Base – Livingston, Tenn. – Livingston Academy

The Raiders ripped off six consecutive wins last week behind Maynord’s stellar offensive play. Maynord batted .769 (10-for-13) for the week with seven RBIs and eight runs scored. Racking up the extra-base hits, the freshman accumulated three doubles, a triple and two homeruns for a 1.615 slugging percentage. Maynord leads the Raiders in 2013 with a team-high .409 batting average and six doubles.



DIVISION I PITCHER OF THE WEEK

Brooke Bell – Pitt Community College, N.C.
Right-Handed Pitcher – Boynton Beach, Fla. – Park Vista Community High School

In three appearances last week for the Bulldogs, Bell recorded a save and picked up two wins to improve her record to 5-2 on the year. In 16 innings pitched, Bell recorded 21 strikeouts while holding her opponents to two earned runs on eight hits. The freshman capped off Pitt’s 9-7 win over USC-Sumter (S.C.) with four strikeouts in 1 2/3 innings. In 54.1 innings of work with the Bulldogs this season, Bell has a 2.19 ERA.


DIVISION II PLAYER OF THE WEEK  

Amanda Best – Dodge City Community College, Kan.
Catcher – Parker, Colo. – Pondarosa High School

Best had a spectacular week with the Conquistadors both at and behind the plate. The sophomore batted for a .583 average (7-for-12), including three doubles and two homeruns. Best drove in 12 runs on the week while scoring six of her own. Defensively, Best gunned down all three runners that attempted steals. The Conquistadors are led offensively by Best who has a team-high .476 batting average and 44 RBIs this season.



DIVISION II PITCHER OF THE WEEK

Samantha O’Connor – CCBC-Catonsville, Md.
Right-Handed Pitcher – Columbia, Md. – Howard High School

Making five appearances last week for the Cardinals, O’Connor notched four wins and improved her record this year to 14-2. The freshman accumulated 48 strikeouts in 26 innings of work, holding her opponents to just one earned run on 13 hits. O’Connor has been the Cardinals’ workhorse in 2013, compiling a team-low 1.59 ERA in a team-high 105.1 innings pitched.


DIVISION III PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Kara Ekx – Rock Valley College, Ill.
Third Base – McHenry, Ill. – McHenry High School

Earning player of the week honors for the second time in 2013, Ekx spurred the Golden Eagles on to a 6-2 record last week. Ekx had a .613 batting average (19-for-31), hitting two doubles, two triples and six homeruns for a 1.387 slugging percentage. On the week, the freshman registered 25 RBIs and 20 runs scored. Ekx leads the No. 5 Golden Eagles in virtually every offensive category and ranks first in Division III with 10 homeruns and 50 RBIs.



DIVISION III PITCHER OF THE WEEK

Elizabeth Gratta – Middlesex County College, N.J.
Right-Handed Pitcher – South Plainfield, N.J. – South Plainfield High School

Gratta contributed 26 solid innings last week for the Colts, earning wins in all four of her appearances. The freshman struck out 18 batters on the week, while holding her opponents to eight earned runs and 24 hits. No. 10 Middlesex has relied heavily on Gratta’s right-arm this season as she boasts a team-low 2.40 ERA in a team-high 67 innings of work.
