Hawkins drives in nine runs as No. 7 JCJC sweeps Co-Lin

ELLISVILLE – Makenzie Hawkins had quite an evening for the 7th-ranked Jones County Junior College Lady Bobcats.

Hawkins belted a pair of three-run home runs and had nine RBIs in two games to help JCJC defeat Copiah-Lincoln 9-0 and 16-3 here Tuesday at Community Bank Park. Both games were called after five innings because of the ‘mercy rule.’

JCJC is now 26-4 overall, 9-3 in the MACJC South Division.

The Lady Bobcats are not scheduled to play again until a 4 p.m. home doubleheader on April 9 against Pearl River Community College. The games will be webcast on www.jcjc.tv with Shawn Wansley on the call.

Co-Lin, 19-11-1 overall and 4-8 in the division, travels to East Central on Saturday.

JCJC took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when CC Lawn walked and Relanda McFarland reached on a bunt single. Both runners advanced on a deep fly ball to centerfield by Bethany Volking.

After a strikeout, Hawkins delivered a two-run single to left.

The Lady Bobcats made in 6-0 in the third when McFarland walked and Volking reached on an infield single. Karley Crosby’s infield single scored McFarland.

Hawkins, a freshman from Nettleton, then stepped up and blasted a three-run home run to centerfield.

JCJC closed the scoring with three runs in the fourth. Lawn singled and scored on McFarland’s double. Volking reached on an error, which allowed McFarland to score. Volking scored when Hawkins reached on an error.

Samantha Buller, 15-2, got the win. She went the distance, allowed just a single to Shelby Mitchell, walked one and struck out three.

Hawkins homered, singled and drove in five runs. McFarland doubled and singled, while Crosby singled twice. Lawn, Volking and Kalyn McNabb had singles.

Brooke Gonzalez started, went 3 1/3 innings and took the loss. She gave up eight runs (seven earned), walked two and hit one. Chynna Coghlan went 2/3 of an inning, allowed one unearned run, one hit and hit a batter.

JCJC took a 4-0 lead in the second when McNabb delivered a two-run single and later scored on a double steal. McFarland had an RBI double, which scored Angela Land.

The Lady Bobcats put the game away in the third when they sent 13 batters to the plate and scored 10 runs.

A three-run home run by Hawkins ended the inning.

Before that, Brooke David and Rebecca Dunn had RBI singles and scored on double steals. Volking also had an RBI single. The Lady Wolves also committed three errors in the inning.

JCJC’s final runs came in the fourth when Alex Barrett singled and later scored on a bases loaded walk to Volking. Lawn singled and scored when Hawkins drew a bases loaded walk.

Co-Lin got an RBI single from Mitchell and RBI groundout from Kayla Craft in the fourth. Missy Romero had an RBI single in the fifth.

Michele Hester, 9-2, posted the victory. She went the distance and allowed eight hits.

Hawkins homered, singled and had four RBIs for Jones. Crosby and McNabb each doubled and singled, while Dunn had two singles. McFarland had a double, while Lawn, Volking, David and Alex Barrett had singles.

Romero and Mitchell each singled twice for Co-Lin. Karla Beth Hux had a double, while Kaitlin Moak, Kaitlan Melton and Bradi Davis had singles.

Meghan Johnson started and took the loss. She went 2-plus innings, allowed seven runs and six hits. Coghlan pitched 1/3 of an inning, giving up four hits and six runs. Gonzalez pitched 2/3 of an inning and gave up one hit and recorded a strikeout. Romero pitched the final inning and allowed two runs on two hits, walked two and struck out two.
