Welch, Coker come up big in late-game rally against Northeast

Freshman first baseman Austin Welch (Hamilton) had a clutch pinch hit single as part of the ICC’s two-run top of the seventh to rally for a 3-2 Game 1 victory over Northeast Mississippi Community College on Thursday.

Welch roped a single to left-center and advance to second after a four-pitch walk was issued to Brent Younger (Columbus) and to third when University of North Alabama signee Jake Smith (Columbus) was hit by a pitch before tying the game on a sacrifice fly by Cody Shrewsbury (Tupelo).

Cameron Coker (Germantown, TN) ripped a double over a leaping shortstop and through the gap in left-center to push across Younger for the game-winning run. Winning pitcher and Mississippi State signee Ben Hudspeth struck out one and got a pair of fly outs in the bottom of the seventh to complete the come-from-behind victory.

The Indians (13-15, 4-6 North) rallied to take the lead in Game 2 3-2 when Shrewsbury jumped over the tag at home plate to score when Coker reached on a fielder’s choice, but NECC rallied with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the seventh to earn a split with the 4-2 victory.

Gill homers as Indians split with Mississippi Delta

Freshman Ethan Gill (Pontotoc) smashed a three-run home run to highlight a four-run bottom of the sixth as the Indians rallied to earn a split with Mississippi Delta behind a 4-1 Game 2 victory on a rainy Friday in Fulton.

Smith scored on an one-out single by Coker after William Goss (Tupelo) reached via a walk to come around on Gill’s third homer of the year. Ben Aldridge (Tupelo) got the win in relief duty.

The Indians dropped Game 1 6-0 as Shrewsbury, Gill, Younger and University of Kentucky signee Tyler Tipton (Shelbyville, KY) each singled while Collin Minga (Mantachie) was the pitcher of record in the loss.
