By Shawn Wansley, JCJC Sports Information Director

ELLISVILLE – Jones County Junior College used solid pitching and the long ball to take a pair of games from Baton Rouge Community College (La.) here Thursday afternoon at Community Bank Park.

Samantha Buller tossed a one-hit shutout to lead the 7th-ranked Lady Bobcats to a 6-0 win in game one. In game two, Reagan Gavin slugged a pair of home runs to lift JCJC to a 4-3, 8-inning victory.

The Lady Bobcats are now 24-4 overall, while BRCC is 17-18-1.

JCJC returns to MACJC South Division play with a home doubleheader at 4 p.m. on Wednesday vs. Co-Lin. Both games will be aired on www.jcjc.tv with Shawn Wansley on the call.

BRCC hosts Pearl River on Monday.

Lady Bobcats 6, BRCC 0

Buller, the reigning MACJC Pitcher of the Week, allowed a leadoff single to Whitney Troxclair in the second inning and that was it. Troxclair was the only baserunner BRCC had, as Buller faced just one batter over the minimum.

Buller, 13-2, struck out six.

JCJC took a 1-0 lead in the first when Alex Barrett drew a one-out walk and Bethany Volking singled. An RBI single by Makenzie Hawkins scored Barrett.

The Lady Bobcats made it 2-0 in the second when Relanda McFarland reached on a two-out error, stole second and scored on CC Lawn’s single.

In the fourth, Volking reached on an error and scored when Karley Crosby belted her 12th home run of the season over the leftfield fence. That ties Crosby for second in the nation in home runs.

JCJC completed the scoring in the sixth when Brooke David singled and Kalyn McNabb hit her second home run of the year.

Lawn had three singles, David singled twice, Crosby and McNabb homered for the Lady Bobcats. Volking and Hawkins had singles.

Haley Grantham went the distance and took the loss. She gave up nine hits, walked one and struck out two.

The Lady Bobcats made it dramatic in game two.

JCJC trailed 3-0 entering the bottom of the fifth when David singled with one out and Gavin, a freshman from South Jones, drilled a home right over the right-centerfield fence.

It was still 3-2 going into the bottom of the seventh when Gavin led off with a home run to dead center to tie the game at 3-3.

In the bottom of the eighth, Volking was on second to start the inning and was sacrificed to third by Crosby. Hawkins then singled to deep center to end the game.

Dana Arender, 2-0, entered in the top of the fourth in relief of Buller and got the win. She pitched five innings, allowed one run, two hits, walked one and struck out one. Buller went the first three innings, gave up two runs, four hits, walked one and struck out one.
