EMPORIA – Freshman thrower Cassie Caswell continued her strong 2013 season and freshman Cecilia Lane posted one of the fastest 3,000-meter steeplechase time in Hutchinson Community College women’s history as the Lady Dragons competed for the first time outdoors this season on Thursday at the ESU Spring Twilight at Emporia State University.

The Lady Dragons had six total qualifiers for the NJCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in May at Gowans Stadium. Hutchinson didn’t get an individual event win, but had nine top-three finishes and had four Lady Dragon Top 10 all-time performances on Thursday.

Caswell qualified for nationals in three events on Thursday reaching national standards in the shot put, discus and hammer throw. Caswell was third in the discus with a throw of 135 feet. That mark was fourth longest in HCC women’s outdoor history. She finished fifth in the shot put at 42-9 ¾ and fifth in the hammer at 140-4. Both of those distances rank fifth in HCC history in their respective events.

Lane finished second in the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 12 minutes, 23.35 seconds. That is the third-fastest time in HCC history in that event.

All-American Paige Stuhlsatz reached qualifying height in the pole vault on Thursday. She finished third overall with a height of 10 feet, 6 inches.

All-American Autumn Iverson punched her ticket to nationals in the shot put. She finished third at ESU with a distance of 43-4 1/2.

The Lady Dragons will next compete at the Butler Invitational on March 23 at the Butler Grizzly Invitational in El Dorado.
