DENNIS, Texas – There was some good and some bad as the No. 7-ranked Hutchinson Community College men’s golf team opened the 2013 spring season on Monday and Tuesday against some of the nation’s best teams in the NJCAA District 2 Preview at Sugar Tree Golf Course.

The good was the strong play of sophomore Ben Cotton, who fired a 1-over par 71 to finish in a tie for seventh place.

The bad was the fact that HCC recorded the worst team round of any of the 11 teams participating on Tuesday and finished in eighth place with a 36-hole score of 626.

Cotton, who had a 79 on Monday, shot one of his best rounds of his sophomore year, tying for the low individual round on Tuesday with a round of 72. Cotton rallied to finish in an eight-way tie for seventh at 9-over 151.

Sophomore Michael O’Connor tied for 28th at 156 after rounds of 75 and 81.

Sophomore Mason Varner was 37th overall at 159 (76-82). Freshman Jordan Hecker placed 49th at 162 (76-86). Freshman Trevor Pauls and sophomore Trey Hayden tied for 57th at 168. Pauls had rounds of 82 and 86, while Hayden had rounds of 83 and 85.

The Blue Dragons shot a 306 team round on Monday and were fourth after the opening round.

McLennan won the team title at 595, seven strokes ahead of Paris Junior College.

Tyler’s Cameron Lindell and McLennan’s Ryan Beatty tied for top individual honors at 5-over 147.

The Blue Dragons will again embark on a trip to Texas before returning to Jayhawk Conference play in a couple of weeks by playing in the Midland College Invitational on Monday and Tuesday.
