EMCC Lady Lions snap six-game skid with 14-1, 3-0 home doubleheader softball sweep over Southwest Mississippi
 March 5, 2013

SCOOBA – The Lady Lions of East Mississippi Community College snapped their six-game softball losing skid in convincing fashion by sweeping visiting Southwest Mississippi Community College, 14-1 and 3-0, Monday afternoon at the EMCC Softball Field.

EMCC’s opening-game offensive attack began in the first inning with Abby Roberts’ two-out, bases-clearing double to the left-center field gap off Southwest starting pitcher Rachel Smith.  With the aid of a pair of errors by the visitors, the Lady Lions batted around and added four more runs in the third inning on just two hits, including a two-run single by Haley Tutor, to increase their lead to 7-0.

EMCC doubled that margin by sending a dozen batters to the plate the following frame.  Scoring seven runs on eight hits, the Lady Lions’ fourth inning was highlighted by Sarah Dudley’s three-run home run, Roberts’ second run-producing double of the contest and RBI singles by Amber Spann and Halie Green.

Meanwhile in the circle, Green evened her pitching record to 3-3 on the year by allowing four hits, with two strikeouts and two walks, in four scoreless innings of work.  The only run the Lady Bears would manage on the afternoon came in the fifth inning on Carrie Phillips’ RBI single off EMCC southpaw Tori Seymour.

Offensively in the opener, Tutor and Spann paced the Lady Lions’ 12-hit effort with three singles apiece.  Roberts and Dudley both knocked in four runs during the five-inning, run-ruled contest.

With 22 total hits on the day, EMCC added 10 more hits in the low-scoring nightcap.  Tutor, from New Hope High School, got the Lady Lions on the scoreboard with a two-run single in the second inning for her fourth hit of the doubleheader.  Taylor Hackney’s two-out RBI double in the third made it 3-0 and gave starting pitcher Kendra Wilson all the run support she would need.

Wilson, a freshman right-hander from South Lamar High School in Millport, Ala., evenly scattered a trio of Southwest singles in the first, fourth and seventh innings en route to going the distance for the Lady Lions.  She struck out four and walked three in picking up her first collegiate victory in three decisions.

Leading the way at the plate for the home-standing Lady Lions in the nightcap were Hackney with her pair of doubles.  Angel Johnson and Corey Dawkins each added two singles apiece for the winners.

Coach Kyndall White’s 6-8 EMCC Lady Lions take on Marion Military Institute in a Wednesday doubleheader in Marion, Ala., before beginning MACJC North Division play with a Saturday road twin bill against Mississippi Delta Community College in Moorhead.
