 March 3, 2013

OGLESBY, Ill. --- Following its commanding 66-44 NJCAA Region IV semifinal victory over Morton Saturday afternoon at Illinois Valley, the Prairie State College women’s basketball program, once again, finds itself on the precipice of school history.

With a triumph in the March 9 title tilt against local foe, and top-seeded, South Suburban, the Pioneers will become the first PSC athletic program to qualify for a national tournament in consecutive years.

PSC obviously had its collective sites set on another title game berth from the get-go Saturday, racing out to a 13-0 lead and 28-19 advantage at the intermission.

As has been the case for much of the seasons second half, the Pioneers’ received well-rounded efforts from sophomore centers Danielle Zandstra (Heritage Christian H.S., Ind.) and Amanda Pierce (Simeon H.S.). Zandstra dropped in a game-high 15 tallies while Pierce added another 13.

Zandstra also pulled in 11 rebounds while blocking five shots and making off with five steals.

Freshman guard Shanterra Jones (East Chicago H.S., Ind.) added nine points while fellow freshman guard Nijea Dixon (Joliet Central H.S.) chipped in eight to go along with her seven assists.

Sophomore point guard Latoi Merriweather (Merrillville H.S., Ind.) also performed well, contributing seven points, five assists and three steals.

Saturday’s championship contest will tip off at noon at Illinois Valley.
