The Cleveland State Lady Cougars picked a good point in the season to play their best basketball as they took care of the Jackson State Lady Generals on Saturday afternoon at L. Quentin Lane Gymnasium. The Cleveland State ladies made it two for two on the weekend and five in a row as they recorded a pair of blowouts to finish the regular season, topping Jackson State on Saturday, 70-39 and doing the same to the Columbia State Lady Chargers on Friday night by a lopsided score of 68-35.

The Cougars matched the ladies success with a sweep of their own as they handed the Generals a 54-44 loss after taking care of business on Friday night with a 71-59 win over the Chargers.

It was sophomore day at Cleveland State as six Lady Cougars Hannah Brown, Me'Lisa Martinez, Shea Nunn, Robyn Anthony, Mercedes Owens and Chelsea Jones and three Cougars Travis Jones, Ralph Eason and Jameico McPherson played their final home games.

The Lady Cougars started the game with the cold hand on Saturday as the Lady Generals scored the first four points holding the home team scoreless for almost five minutes. But, after that it was all Cleveland State as they warmed quickly and went on a 13-3 run to take the lead for good.

Shea Nunn completed a three-point play after a spectacular pass from Me'Lisa Martinez while Jasmine Davis did the same moments later and Mercedes Owens and Chelsea Jones added a shot each from downtown as the Cleveland State lead grew to double digits midway through the half.

Martinez knocked down two straight shots and Brown hit her third tri-fecta of the half as the Lady Cougars took a commanding 39-24 lead at the break.

The Lady Cougars ran away and hid from their guests in the second half as Robyn Anthony scored all 13 of her points in the final 20 minutes on a variety of shots including a shot from behind the arc and a pair in the paint. Owens added two more long range shots and Martinez put the finishing touches on the win with a three point play to finish the ladies contest.

"It was a good way to finish our season and also send our sophomores out with five straight wins," commented Lady Cougar coach Dan Lumpkin. "Everyone contributed this weekend, we had a little more to play for, but we finished strong and now hopefully we can carry our momentum over into the tournament next week."

Martinez paved the way for Cleveland State (18-9, 11-7) with 14 points, four assists and three steals while Anthony added 13 points and 8 rebounds and Owens and Brown had 11 points apiece. Samantha Smith led the Lady Generals wih 11 points while Kylan Crane added nine.
