Chattanooga State sweeps Cleveland State
 March 2, 2013

By BRYAN GRISHAM, CSCC Sports Information Director

The defending National Champion Chattanooga State Lady Tigers finished off the first Region VII Conference weekend of play in a big way by completing their four game sweep of the Cleveland State Lady Cougars at Lady Cougar Field on Friday afternoon.

After taking a twinbill from the Lady Cougars on Thursday, the Lady Tigers did the same on Friday, winning game one 8-2 and finishing the series off with a 14-2 win.

Chattanooga State jumped on top in game one with a four run outburst in the top of the third inning. Marina Wilkerson had a two-run double while Shelby Robertson singled in another run and then came around to score on a wild pitch.

The Lady Cougars scored their first runs of the series in the bottom of the third as Leslie Still drew a walk and scored on a botched bunt play by the Lady Tigers. Ciera Belcher later scored on a passed ball as the home team cut the lead in half to trail 4-2.

Chattanooga State got those two runs back in the fourth on a solo homer by Wilkerson and a passed ball. A sacrifice fly in the fifth moved the lead to 7-2 and a solo homer an inning later from Lacye Walker finished game one. Walker also got the win in the circle for the Lady Tigers.

The Lady Tigers jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in game two with four hits and an error in the first and an RBI double by Emily Dagnan in the third.

Paige Mayer put the Lady Cougars on the board with a solo home run in the bottom of the third and back to back doubles from Emily Huston and Shelby Hanson added another run in the fourth, but it was too little to late as the Lady Tigers tacked on three more in the fourth and six in the fifth to take the win.

Haley Fagen picked up the win for the Lady Tigers (9-5, 4-0). Sara O'Rear had the only Cleveland State hit in game one while Huston, Hanson, Mayer, Ashley Swaney and Maura Ditto all had a hit for the Lady Cougars (1-5, 0-4) in game two.

Cleveland State will hit the road for a pair of games with Snead State on Tuesday.
