 February 19, 2013

The Vincennes University Women’s Basketball Team continued to ring it up from beyond the 3-point line Monday night as the Trailblazers hit nine more treys on the way to a 90-61 win over visiting Shawnee at the VU P.E. Complex.

Sophomore Zhanna Chukhrii hit four 3-pointers as part of her game-high 22 points. Freshman Ashley Hawkins scored 17, freshman Shelby Parmer had 13 and freshman Chelsea Jellison added four treys of her own for 12 points. Freshman Deborah Martin finished with 11 for VU (11-16).

Shawnee’s Ashley Matlock had 21 for the Saints.

VU jumped out to a double-digit first half lead and led 45-36 at intermission. In the first 10 minutes of the second half, the Trailblazers stretched the lead to 71-48 and put the game out of reach for Shawnee.

The Trailblazers will be idle until Saturday when they host Southwestern Illinois in a men’s/women’s doubleheader at the VU P.E. Complex. The women will start at 5 p.m. and the VU men will follow against Southwestern Illinois at about 7 p.m.

The ladies’ final home game of the season will be March 1 vs. Roane State. That game will tip off at 7 p.m. VU will close out the regular season on March 2 at Southeastern Illinois in Harrisburg, IL.
