VU Trailblazers top Shawnee for 25th win, Franklin's 400th career victory
 February 19, 2013

The Vincennes University Men’s Basketball Team improved to 25-2 on the season, Trailblazer Coach Todd Franklin got his 400th career win and sophomore Deshawn Delaney moved close to the 1,000-point mark for his VU career Monday night as the Trailblazers turned away Shawnee 73-49 at the VU P.E. Complex.

The NJCAA No. 6 Trailblazers (25-2), who were led by sophomore Darius Carter’s game-high 19 points, used two buckets by Carter inside and an old-fashioned 3-point play by freshman Loomis Gerring to help get out to a 9-0 lead on Shawnee (14-11) with 17:41 to go in the first half. VU stretched the lead to 18-4 over the next six minutes as Delaney scored five quick points and moved to within 11 of the VU 1,000 Career Point Club. He finished the game with 13 points, leaving him three shy of the milestone that would put him in the company of the 35 greatest scorers in VU history.

VU didn’t let up in the first 20 minutes and three straight treys by freshman Paul Knapp (who finished with 12 points), a Loomis Gerring rebound bucket and a Delaney free throw moved the Trailblazers out to a 34-6 advantage with just less than 6:00 to go before halftime. The score was 41-17 at intermission.

From there, VU endured a foul-marred and free throw-missing second half for the victory. In the second half, Shawnee was whistled for 18 of its 35 personal fouls. The Trailblazers were only 10-of-20 at the stripe in the second 20 minutes and 16-of-40 for the game. But the Saints were only 14-for-25 at the line and hit only one trey which helped VU cruise to the win.

The Trailblazers will travel to John A. Logan Wednesday for an 8:30 p.m. (Vincennes time) game. Then, VU will host Southwestern Illinois Saturday in a men’s/women’s doubleheader at the VU P.E. Complex. The VU women will start at 5 p.m. and the men will follow at about 7 p.m.

The Trailblazers will then close out the regular season on March 2 at Southeastern Illinois in another men’s/women’s doubleheader.
