No. 20 Lady Senators finish road trip 3-2

COVINGTON, Ga. – The 20th ranked Walters State Lady Senators wrapped up a five-game weekend Sunday in Georgia with a 3-2 record for in three days of action in the Georgia Perimeter College Spring Invitational.After sweeping the Lady Jaguars on Friday, the Lady Senators dropped a tough 1-0 decision in eight innings against fifth ranked Florida State College-Jacksonville on Saturday afternoon before topping Spartanburg Methodist 9-0 in five innings in the nightcap. Walters State fell 9-0 to Southern Union State from Alabama on Sunday to close the trip.

The Lady Senators now stand at 7-2 on the season heading into their first home games of the season this coming weekend.

In the opener Saturday, Walters State was held without a hit but had the bases loaded in the eighth inning before failing to score. The Blue Wave (12-7) took advantage of the international tiebreaker rule and scored on a two-out bloop single to win, 1-0.

Kelsey Weddle was the tough luck loser in the contest after giving up an unearned run on four hits while fanning six batters in 7.2 innings of work. Riley Carter was the winning hurler, tossing a no-hitter while striking out seven and walking five in eight innings.

In the Saturday nightcap, the Lady Senators pushed four runs across in the first inning and Lindsey Vaught was nearly unhittable on the mound in a 9-0 victory over Spartanburg Methodist (7-8).

Andrea Eison hit a solo homer and Latosha Rectenwald added a three-run homer later in the frame for a 4-0 lead. Eison added an RBI single in the second to extend the lead to 5-0.

Courtney Hutcherson ripped an RBI single and Rectenwald added a two-run double in the fourth to push the margin to 8-0, and Hutcherson drew a run scoring walk in the fifth to make the final 9-0.

Eison, Rectenwald and Kendi King each had two hits in the win. Vaught (3-0) got the win after allowing just two hits in four innings, and Taylor Green pitched a hitless fifth in the win.

On Sunday, the Lady Senators left eight runners on base and never recovered from allowing three runs in the first inning to Southern Union State (12-3) in a 9-0 defeat.

The Bison scored another run in the third, two in the fourth with three more combined in the final two innings to end the game in six innings.

Carley Sargent was the winner for Southern Union State after scattering seven hits in six scoreless innings. Weddle (3-2) took the loss after allowing six runs – five earned – on eight hits in 3.1 innings.

Haley Taylor and Lindsee Price had two hits each for Walters State, while Eison, King and Hannah Kiser each added a hit in the loss.

The Lady Senators will open their home schedule Saturday when they host Lakeland (Ill.) at the Lady Senators Softball Complex. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 2 p.m.
