No. 7 Lady Senators rout Chattanooga State on Sophomore Day

MORRISTOWN, Tenn. – The seventh ranked Walters State Lady Senators celebrated Sophomore Day with another blowout win Saturday to close out a perfect home record for the season.

Sophomores Caprisha Rogers and Aisjah Roan played their final game inside ‘Z’ Buda Gymnasium, and they walked out as big winners once again, as the Lady Senators blistered Chattanooga State 74-37.

With the win, Walters State improves to 25-1 on the season and 17-0 in Tennessee Community College Athletic Association action, and it was also their 19th straight win.

The loss dropped the Lady Tigers to 10-8 overall and 7-6 in TCCAA action.

The Lady Senators held a modest 8-4 lead five minutes into the game, but the next five minutes belonged to Walters State. Karly Frye and Tangela Crenshaw both scored four points in a 12-3 run that lifted the lead to 20-7 midway through the half.

The Lady Tigers hung tough the final 10 minutes of the half, cutting the lead to eight points on two occasions before Donnesha Shuler scored in the final seconds to give the Lady Senators a 31-21 lead at halftime.

Shuler had seven points while Jasmine McAllister and Tangela Crenshaw each added six points in the half for Walters State, as the team shot 15 of 32 from the field (46.9 percent) in the opening 20 minutes.

Sierra Sales led Chattanooga State with six points while Khamiyah Crawford and Ciarra Gordan each had five in the half for the Lady Tigers.

The Lady Senators began to pull away early in the second half, and a 3-point play by Crenshaw gave Walters State a 40-24 lead with 16:19 left in the contest. The Lady Tigers were down 18 after a 3-pointer with 11:02 left, but a bucket by Shuler sparked a 13-0 run that was capped by back-to-back buckets by Roan to make it 61-28.

Chattanooga State never cut the lead below 30 the rest of the way, and another 10-0 run by the Lady Senators pushed the lead to its peak at 73-32 in the closing moments of the contest.

Walters State ended the game shooting 44.7 percent (34 of 76) from the field, but made only 1 of 14 from long range and turned the ball over 18 times.

Shuler led the Lady Senators with 17 points, while McAllister and Roan had 10 each in the win. Rogers totaled 11 rebounds and Crenshaw ended up with nine points and 10 boards, as Walters State won the battle on the glass, 50-33.

Karly Frye dished out eight assists as well for the Lady Senators, as the team ended up with 19 dimes in the win.

Chattanooga State shot 26.9 percent (14 of 52) from the field, including 4 of 17 from long distance. The Lady Tigers committed 27 turnovers, which led to 25 points for Walters State.

Crawford led Chattanooga State with 10 points in the loss. Tyresha King had 11 rebounds and Sales had nine boards for the Lady Tigers.

The Lady Senators will be back in action Saturday when they travel to Harriman to take on TCCAA rival Roane State in the season finale. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
