LAWRENCE – Sophomore Paige Stuhlsatz captured a regional championship in the pole vault to lead the Hutchinson Community College women’s track and field team at the 2013 Region VI Indoor championships on Friday at the University of Kansas’ Anschutz Pavilion.

The Lady Dragons finished third in the final Jayhawk West standings and fifth in the overall Region VI standings. Official team scores for both the regional and league meets haven’t been released yet, but teams were told of their placings before departing on Friday.

Stuhlsatz the 2011 indoor and outdoor national runner-up in the pole vault, cleared 10 feet, 11 3/4 inches to win her second-straight regional indoor championship. Stuhlsatz had already qualified for the 2013 NJCAA Indoor Championships.

Stuhlsatz as the only Lady Dragon to win a regional championship and she was one of two Jayhawk West champions to be crowned on Friday.

Freshman Cassie Caswell won the Jayhawk West and finished third in the shot put by finally uncorking her best throw of the season. Caswell went 42 feet, 7 ½ inches, which is the third best in Lady Dragon indoor history.

Right behind her was sophomore Autumn Iverson who posted the fifth best women’s shot put in indoor HCC history at 41-11 1/4. She was second in the Jayhawk West and fifth in the region.

Caswell finished second in the Jayhawk West and fifth in the region in the 20-pound weight throw at 47-7 3/4.

Freshman middle distance runner Ashlynn Lambert just missed qualifying for the 1,000 meters. Her PR time of 3:14.10 was less than 1 second of the NJCAA qualifying standard, but coach Pat Becher said she would likely be a white-card entry for nationals. Lambert’s time was the third-fastest in indoor history at HCC.

The Lady Dragons will compete in a last-chance meet next week at a site to be determined to try and get a few more qualifiers before heading to the NJCAA Indoor Championships in March at Lubbock, Texas.
