 February 16, 2013

COVINGTON, Ga. – The 20th ranked Walters State Lady Senators spoiled the season opener for the Georgia Perimeter Lady Jaguars Friday night by sweeping a doubleheader from the home team at Lady Jaguar Field on the GPC Newton campus.

The Lady Senators used home runs from freshmen Hannah Kiser and Lindsee Price and a six-hit masterpiece from Kelsey Weddle on the mound to record a 6-1 win in the opener. The nightcap saw WSCC belt 14 hits, including three each from freshmen Andrea Eison and Kendi King, to win 10-2 in six innings by the mercy rule.

With the sweep, the Lady Senators improve to 6-0 on the season heading into today’s action in the GPC Spring Invitational against fifth ranked Florida State College-Jacksonville, Spartanburg Methodist, Southern Union State and Georgia Perimeter.

In the opener, Walters State plated two runs in the second inning to take an early lead and never trailed. Latosha Rectenwald singled to right field and scored on Kiser’s first collegiate homer, making it 2-0.

The Lady Senators added another run in the third on a solo blast from Price, her second of the season, to push the lead to 3-0 before the Lady Jags got their lone run off Weddle (3-0) in the third.

WSCC added to the lead in the fifth on an RBI single by Rectenwald, and Andrea Rogers lifted a sacrifice fly for an RBI in the seventh before Brooke Rhodes slapped an RBI single to provide the final score of the opener.

Kiser, Rectenwald and Haley Taylor each had two hits in the win, with Taylor recording a two-bagger. Weddle scattered six hits and allowed an earned run while fanning five batters in a complete game effort.

Rachel Martinez had two hits and scored the lone run for the Lady Jags in the loss. Stephanie Satterfield (0-1) took the defeat after going the distance and allowing six runs – five earned – on 10 hits.

In the nightcap, the Lady Senators pushed five runs across in the second inning and never looked back. Emilee Solomon had a two-run double, Katelyn Stewart had a sacrifice fly for an RBI, Andrea Eison tagged a run scoring double and Price added an RBI base hit to make it 5-0.

WSCC added another run in the third on a bases loaded walk by Taylor before the Lady Jaguars plated a run third and fourth innings off Lady Senator pitcher Lindsey Vaught to cut the deficit to 6-2.

Walters State put the game away in the fifth and sixth innings by scoring a pair of runs in each frame. Courtney Hutcherson ripped an RBI double and King added an RBI single in the fifth, while Stewart and Taylor both drove in a run in the sixth to push the lead to 10-2.

Maddie Griffin relieved Vaught in the bottom of the sixth and retired the side to end the game by the mercy rule.

Price and Stewart each added two hits in the nightcap for the Lady Senators. Vaught (2-0) picked up the win by allowing two runs – one earned – on three hits in five innings, while Griffin allowed only one base runner in her inning of work.

Lyndsey Parden (0-1) took the loss for Georgia Perimeter.

The Lady Senators will be back on the diamond today when they take on No. 5 Florida State College-Jacksonville at noon and Spartanburg Methodist College at 6 p.m.
