EC Softball Squad Sweeps MCC

Led by a strong pitching performance in both contests and a productive offense in the nightcap, East Central Community College’s fast-pitch softball team recorded a pair of victories over rival Meridian Community College Thursday on the MCC campus.

Tenna Patterson shut down the MCC offense in a 2-0 win in the opener, and fellow sophomore hurler Mary Smith allowed just two runs and EC bats came alive for a 14-2 thumping in the second contest as the Lady Diamond Warriors even their record at 4-4 under first-year head coach Kristin Chaney.

Patterson fanned eight batters and walked two in the seven-inning battle. She is a product of Lexington (Ala.) High School.

EC got all the runs it needed in the fourth inning, on an RBI double from freshman Morgan Porter of Enterprise. Porter also singled to lead the offense.

Other hitters were LaJoya Griffin of Philadelphia, double; and Lindsey Beard of Clarkdale, and Ty Buckley and Dakota Vowell, both of Neshoba Central, singles each.    

In the second contest, EC tallied eight runs in the first three innings and coasted to the easy win.

A two-run homer by Amber Broom of Brandon helped fuel the offensive attack.

Also having productive outings at the plate were Vowell, triple, single and three RBIs; A.J. Peeler of Neshoba Central, double, single and RBI; Buckley, two singles; Marlee Massey of Neshoba Central, double and two RBIs; and Griffin and Kaylin Hopkins of Louisville, singles each. Beard was credited with two RBIs and Kristen Chipley of Leake Academy also knocked in a run.

Sanders allowed four hits and fanned two to win the matchup, which was called after five innings. 

The Lady Diamond Warriors travel to Marion Military Tuesday, Feb. 19, Doubleheader action gets under way at 1 p.m. on the Marion, Ala., campus.
