MIDLAND, Texas -- The Western Nebraska Community College softball team hammered six home runs on the day as the Cougars went 3-0 at the Midland Tournament on Friday.

The Cougars opened the day with a 6-3 win over Seminole State College before dropping Luna Community College 11-3 behind four home runs including a grand slam by Bianca Duran. WNCC finished off day one with a 13-0 win over the University of Chihuahua where the team blasted another two home runs.

In the opener, Duran picked up the win from the circle while striking out seven. Offensively, the Cougars scored three times in the first and third innings. WNCC finished with 10 hits.

Angel Council, Danielle Hearn, and Mariah Shepherd paced the team with two hits and a RBI each. Shepherd had the only extra base hit with a double.

The second game saw WNCC and Luna tied at 2-2 after one inning. The Cougars then plated two more runs in the third on a 2-run home run by Shepherd. The Cougars busted the game wide open in the fourth with a 7-run inning that included three home runs.

The first home run was Duran grand slam that scored Hearn, Kayla Romey, and Angel Council for an 8-0 lead. Jennifer Cottle followed with a solo shot for a 9-0 lead. WNCC wasn't through as Kasey Cash walked and then freshman Lindsey Shiels-Brophy hammered a shot to left field for the 11-2 lead.

WNCC pounded out nine hits in the contest. Duran led the way with a 1-for-3 game with four RBIs, two runs scored, and the home run. Cottle, Shepherd and Hearn all had two hits each. Cottle, Shepherd, and Shiels-Brophy each had two RBIs.

Shelby McGraw picked up the win from the circle as the freshman went four innings, giving up three runs on six hits and walking two. Ravae Herrera tossed the final inning, striking out one.

WNCC was even more impressive in its third contest, blanking the University of Chihuahua by scoring in all five innings. The Cougars hitting attack was unreal as they finished with 17 hits, including eight extra base hits.

The Cougars had two more home runs in the contest. Duran got her second on the day with a solo shot in the first inning. Kasey Cash then had a solo blast in the second inning for the 2-0 lead. WNCC added two more tin the third on a double by Romey.

WNCC opened up the contest in the fourth as Shepherd doubled and then scored on a Hayley Paxton double. The Cougars then had back-to-back-to-back singles from Hearn, Herrera, and Romey before Council blasted a triple to score two runs. Council scored on a single by Duran for a 9-0 lead. WNCC added four runs in the fifth on doubles by Shepherd and Council.

Six Cougars finished with multiple hits. Duran led the way with a 3-for-3 performance with four RBIs and a home run. Romey went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a double, followed by Council with a 2-for-4 game with a double, triple, two runs scored, and three RBIs.

Also collecting multiple hits were Shepherd with a 2-for-4 game with two runs scored and double; Hearn with a 2-for-3 with two runs scored; and Paxton going 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs.

Herrera picked up the win, going five innings while tossing a two-hitter. Herrera struck out two and walked two.
