No. 7 Lady Senators clinch TCCAA title, NJCAA National Tournament berth

CLEVELAND, Tenn. – Wednesday night’s business trip for the seventh ranked Walters State Lady Senators turned into a championship, as they routed Cleveland State 85-54 to clinch the regular season Tennessee Community College Athletic Association title.
The win also brings another berth in the NJCAA National JUCO Blast in Salina, Kan., in March, which will be the seventh trip to the nation’s heartland in nine years for the Lady Senators.

Walters State also picked up its 18th straight win and improved to 24-1 on the season and 16-0 in TCCAA play.

The loss dropped the Lady Cougars to 13-9 overall and 6-7 in league action.

The Lady Senators opened the game with six straight points in the opening two minutes, but the Lady Cougars trimmed the lead to 13-10 with 9:19 left in the half. A bucket by Cleveland State with 6:03 left cut the margin to 19-17, but the Lady Senators controlled the remainder of the frame.

Freshman Tangela Crenshaw played a big part in a huge Walters State run in the final six minutes, scoring eight of her 12 first half points in that span. The Lady Senators defense forced five turnovers and allowed only one made shot in the stretch, as WSCC closed the half on a 22-2 run to take a 41-19 lead into halftime.

The Lady Senators shot 52.9 percent (18 of 34) from the field in the half, and held a 27-13 edge on the boards. Karly Frye had seven points, while Aisjah Roan, Jasmine McAllister and Caprisha Rogers all had six points. Rogers added five rebounds and six assists, while McAllister had five boards and four assists.

The Lady Cougars shot just 26.9percent (7 of 26) from the field in the half, including just 2 of 8 from long range while committing 10 turnovers.

Cleveland State began the second half on a hot streak, outscoring the Lady Senators 14-7 in the first five minutes to cut the lead to 48-33, but WSCC scored six points in less than a minutes to push the margin back to 54-33.

The Lady Cougars used an 8-1 run to cut the lead to 55-41, but they got no closer than that. Walters State closed the game by outscoring Cleveland State 30-13 in the final 11 minutes to roll to the win.

The Lady Senators shot 49.3 percent (35 of 71) in the contest, including 4 of 11 from long range, and they made just 11 of 20 from the free throw line.

Crenshaw led WSCC with 19 points and 14 rebounds, while Roan and Donnesha Shuler both added 13 points, MiShannon Wilbanks tallied 11 points and McAllister and Rogers both had 10 points in the win. Rogers narrowly missed a triple-double after recording 10 assists, nine rebounds and four steals in the victory. Frye added seven points and five assists for the Lady Senators.

The Lady Cougars ended the night shooting 38.8 percent (19 of 49) from the field, and they committed 19 turnovers. Chelsea Jones paced Cleveland State with 11 points in the defeat.

The Lady Senators will be back in action Saturday when they hold Sophomore Day at ‘Z’ Buda Gymnasium against TCCAA rival Chattanooga State. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
