Lady Eagles slip past Pensacola State, stay alive in postseason hunt
 February 6, 2013

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (February 5, 2013) – FCSAA No. 4 Tallahassee Community College had its hands full with No. 8 Pensacola State College but came out on the winning end of a 60-55 decision on Tuesday evening in Panhandle Conference women’s basketball action.

The victory improved Tallahassee (14-8) to 3-5 in PC play, two games back of third-place Gulf Coast State College (5-3) with four games remaining in the regular season. Pensacola State (11-12, 0-8) remains winless in league play.

Tuesday’s game was nip and tuck for 20 minutes, eventually ending with Tallahassee carrying a 27-25 lead to the locker room.

After four ties and 14 lead changes, Tallahassee finally gave itself some breathing room.

Jeraldine Campbell finished a 9-0 run that gave Tallahassee a 38-30 lead with 14:02 left in the game. The lead reached ten on two occasions, the last at 46-36 at the 10:26 mark.

After Sofia da Silva gave Tallahassee a 56-49 lead, Pensacola State scored six unanswered to pull within a point with 70 seconds remaining.

On Tallahassee’s ensuing possession, Sarah Williams knocked down a pair of free throws, and the Lady Eagles came up with a stop defensively, forcing a Pensacola State turnover. With approximately a five second difference between the game clock and shot clock, Pensacola State elected to go for the stop – but Campbell got into the pain and found da Silva, who banked one of the glass for the clincher with 10 seconds left in the game.

Campbell, who had averaged 31.5 points over her last two games, enjoyed another big night, this time recording a double-double – 21 points and 10 rebounds.

Williams finished with nine points and four assists.

Pensacola State, who dressed only seven players, was led by Allysia Rohlehr with 20. Alexis Horton and Shomari Kendrick added 12 points each.

Tallahassee will begin the third and final round of PC play on Saturday when it travels to Chipola for a 6:30 p.m. eastern date with the Lady Indians. The game will be carried by Panhandle Sports Broadcasting at www.PSBlive.com
