ECCC Lady Warriors Defeat Pearl River; Warriors Fall

Jaianah Matthew poured in 16 points and Xzandra Dowd and Taylor Brister contributed 15 points each in leading the East Central Community College women’s basketball team to a 71-66 victory over division opponent Pearl River Community College Monday night on the Poplarville campus.

With the win, the Lady Warriors improved to 6-12 overall and 3-4 in the MACJC South Division under first-year head coach Crandal Porter.

Matthew, a 5-8 sophomore guard from Arkansas High School in Texarkana, Ark., had two treys and four assists in helping lead EC to a second-straight division win.

Dowd, a 5-8 sophomore guard from Neville High School in Monroe, La., led in rebounds with 13 and was also credited with four assists and two steals.

Brister, a 5-2 freshman guard from Lawrence County High School, had three treys, seven assists and three steals.

Other point makers were Reneisha Evans of Newton County, five; Tynesia Mickens of Noxubee County, three; and Niya Hughes of Forest, two.

Kalisha Washington pumped in 27 points to lead the Lady Wildcats who dropped to 5-10 and 3-5.

EC held a 33-22 advantage at halftime.

The Warriors were not as fortunate and fell 75-58.

Bobby Wrench, a 6-5 sophomore forward from Columbus, tallied 24 points to lead East Central, which dropped to 1-17 and 1-6 under seven-year head coach Maurice Bowie.

Also scorers were Aquill Baynard of Elsik High School in Houston, Tex., 11; Randy Collier of South Leake, eight; Chris Rhoney of West Lauderdale, seven; and Walter Evans of Hattiesburg and T.J. Leatherwood of Northridge (Ala.) High School, four each.

Xavian Rimmer poured in 19 points to lead the Wildcats who improved to 16-2 and 7-1.

EC trailed 29-21 at the break.

ECCC squads return to Brackeen-Wood Thursday, Feb. 7 for division battles with Hinds Community College.  Women’s action begins at 6 p.m. followed by the men’s contest at 8 p.m.

The Lady Warriors and Warriors travel to MS Gulf Coast Community College Monday, Feb. 11. Game times are 6 and 8 p.m. on the Perkinston campus.
