SAINTS STAY PERFECT WITH 9-2 WIN OVER PHCC; WIGGS WINS 400TH CAREER GAME
 February 5, 2013

Box Score

Gainesville, FL – The FCSAA #5 Santa Fe Saints undefeated record stayed intact on Monday afternoon as they breezed past Pasco Hernando CC 9-2.  SF is the only unbeaten team left in the FCSAA.  Coach Johnny Wiggs reached another milestone just one game removed from his 200th Santa Fe victory.  This time he won his 400th overall game in a career that includes eight years at the helm of Polk State College.

“Winning 400 games means you’ve been around a lot of good players and a lot of good assistant coaches,” said SF Coach Johnny Wiggs.  “It’s definitely an honor for me personally but it really highlights the quality people that I’ve been around in my career.”

Clayton Wagner started on the hill for Santa Fe and picked up his first win of the season after pitching a scheduled four innings.  He allowed no runs and gave up just two hits while striking out four.  Luke Helms, Derek Vail, Josh Stewart and Caleb Denmark combined to close out the game.

“I was happy with Clayton’s outing today in his first start,” said Wiggs.  “He seemed to get comfortable as the game went on and gave us four solid shutout innings.”

The Saints opened the scoring in the first, capitalizing on a walk, a wild pitch and a double by Caleb Denmark to score Jamal Martin.  Denmark advanced on a wild pitch and later scored in the inning on a sacrifice fly by Jonathan Camp.

SF added one in the third on a RBI ground out by Colby Lusignan, one in the fifth on a Jared Shouppe RBI single, two in the sixth on a RBI single by Casey Scoggins and a safety squeeze by Jarred Mederos, two in the seventh on a Denmark RBI double and a wild pitch and one in the eighth on a Martin RBI triple to deep right center.

The PHCC runs both came in the sixth off Santa Fe reliever Luke Helms.

Martin led the charge offensively, going 2-for-4 with three runs scored, a triple and a RBI.  Caleb Denmark was 2-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored, Jared Shouppe was 2-for-3 with a RBI and Casy Scoggins was 2-for4 with a RBI.

“We played a complete game offensively,” said Wiggs.  “Our guys hit the ball hard, executed on the base paths and played a little small ball.  I think we have a chance to be a really good offensive club.”

The Saints travel to Polk State College on Wednesday, February 6 to take on the defending FCSAA State Champions at 5:00 PM.  The two teams met once this season already with the Saints coming out on top 23-9 in Gainesville on January 30.
