No. 12 Senators drop opening doubleheader
 February 3, 2013

FLORENCE, S.C. — The 12th ranked Walters State Senators baseball team dropped both games of a doubleheader at Florence Darlington Tech Saturday in their season opening games.

The Senators managed single runs in the first and sixth innings of the opening game, but a two-run fifth inning for the Stingers lifted them to a 3-2 victory. Florence Darlington’s Gunnar Kines tossed a one-hit shutout with 13 strikeouts in the nightcap to lead the home team to a 4-0 victory.

Walters State scored their initial run of the season in the first inning of the opening game. James Fowlkes tripled and scored to give the Senators a 1-0 lead.

The Stingers got a single run in the bottom of the first and two more in the fifth off WSCC starting pitcher Josh Peterson to take a 3-1 lead, but Fowlkes scored once again after singling and stealing second base in the sixth. Colin Bennett plated the run, making it 3-2, but the Senators could not score again.

Jared Cheek got the win on the mound for FDTC in the opening game.

In the nightcap, Kines was nearly unhittable in getting the win over Walters State starter Jay Gause.

Kines did not allow a hit until a Bryan Bussey leadoff single in the sixth inning, and his offense gave him a pair of runs in the third and two more in the sixth as insurance in the win.

Fowlkes had two hits on the day for the Senators, while Bussey, Bennett, Elijah Sutherland, Chris Hipchen, Dustin Woody and Austin Norrell each had a hit in the losses.

Walters State will look to salvage one game from the series when the two meet again Sunday at 12:30 p.m. at Clifford S. Cormell Field.
