SAINTS COME UP SHORT AGAINST #1 CENTRAL FLORIDA 92-86
 February 2, 2013

Ocala, FL – The Santa Fe Saints fought back from an 18 point second half deficit but came up just short Saturday evening against MFC rivals College of Central Florida.  The FCSAA #1/NJCAA #7 Patriots improve to 23-2 on the season and 4-0 in Mid-Florida Conference play and the Saints drop to 13-12 overall and 1-3 in the MFC.  Santa Fe has now dropped 12 of their last 13 matchups against CF.

“We fought for 40 minutes and I’m proud of our guys for their effort tonight despite the outcome not being what we would like,” said SF Coach Chris Mowry.  “We did a lot of good things offensively and used our press effectively to help change the flow of the game.”

Central Florida controlled the action in the first half and took a 51-37 advantage into the locker room.  They built on their momentum to start the second half and pushed the lead out to 18 with 13:40 to play.  SF refused to quit and chopped the lead down to five with 6:24 and Bobby Hunter got it even closer with two free throws, making the score 80-77 with five minutes to play.

The Saints would cut the lead to three on numerous occasions but could get no closer as the Patriots held on for the six point win.

“We kept getting it to three but just couldn’t get that one extra stop that we needed,” said Mowry.   “Central Florida is a great team.  We get them one more time and we will have to try and find a way to stop them.”

The NJCAA leading scorer Bobby Hunter led SF with 28 points, Takija Knight had 16 points and seven rebounds off the bench and Bruno Bogut scored 15 off the bench.  Eugene McCrory led the Patriots with 31 points and Jeremiah Eason had 20.

The Saints travel to Florida State College at Jacksonville on Wednesday, February 6 for a Mid-Florida Conference tilt against the Blue Wave at 8:00 PM.
